Blast Radius

A game as successful as Colony Wars is bound to have imitators, however you wouldn't expect it to come from the same company. Blast Radius looks so similar to CW that it could pass as a mission disk for it. You play as a character named Kayne who is a mercenary working for an alien race called the Vorn. You're pitching in against some bad guys named the Kotan-Kai armed with the best weapons the Vorn can muster. You can choose between nine different spaceships with a total of 13 unique weapons. There are 37 types of enemy craft littered across 40 missions which make up 10 full sectors.

Of course there are differences between the two space shooters and they happen to be quite cool. There is a two-player Link-up Mode that lets you and a friend play cooperatively or an all-out deathmatch with four deathmatch-specific areas in addition to the regular arenas. It should be noted that Blast Radius looks quite good and has some very nice effects. It's just that they look like...well, you know.

Game Reviews

Blast Radius is Colony Wars "Lite." Its a visually interesting space shooter that's heavy on firepower, but short on the multiple objectives and the engaging story line that were so crucial to Colony Wars' success. Decimating everything in your path is your only occupation, and the repetition really harms the gameplay.

From the start, Blast Radius shines with strong visuals. Exploding aircraft and intense gun battles fill the screen with color and depth. Add in the musics upbeat tempo and tight controls, and this shooter could've been a battle to remember. The missions all feel alike, however, merely requiring you to shoot anything that moves. Flying in a technologically advanced spaceship never felt so boring so quickly.

If you want a quick fix in space shooting, rent Blast Radius; it's easy to learn and sports impressive visual and audio effects. But Blast Radius won't be such a blast to those who want something more than just repetitive gameplay.

ProTips:

  • Don't get too dose to big ships and bases that are about to explode. You may go up in flames.
  • When convoys are under fire, hit the attacking gunships first They do more damage than the smaller ships.

Based on the Colony Wars engine, Blast Radius takes pilots on a purely arcade-style adrenaline-packed blastfest. As a galactic kill-for-cash mercenary, you choose from four assault craft and then start heating up missiles and firing off lasers throughout 31 missions; other weapons include cluster bombs, assault rockets, and homing missiles. Blast Radius will also support two-player cooperative or head-to-head combat--but only with a link cable. Even as a one-player game, though, Blast Radius seems like a promising, mindlessly enjoyable, blow-up space adventure.
