Craft The World is a very unique game, that mixes a lot of genres and delivers an unseen proposition. Developed by Dekovir Entertainment, and published by Black Maple Games, Craft The World was released for PC in November 2014. While the game has very positive reviews among the community, it didn’t impress critics and the industry in general.
Mixing and Match
Craft The World is a mixture of Terraria, Dwarf Fortress, Dungeon Keeper, Minecraft, and Tower Defense titles. Players assume the place of a God-like creature that commands a tribe of dwarves by issuing commands. Those commands vary from building houses, attacking enemies, and develop your town. In exchange for their loyalty and obedience, dwarves expect food, clothing, and magical favor in combat.
Deriving part of its gameplay from roguelike titles, Craft The World has randomly generated levels and islands, that come alive by the ever-changing day and night cycle, as well varying weather. Inside these levels, players are tasked with mining and crafting multiple objects and structures. These developments come from augmenting your number of dwarves which happens as you level up.
From its RTS inspirations, Craft The World has players issuing commands and controlling dwarves to execute a variety of actions, mainly regarding defending, and developing their own territory. This also branches into a Tower Defense mode, which requires players to strategically place turrets, strong walls, and traps to protect enemies that come through portals.
Finally, most of the things that happen in-game can be improved or intervened by you, and your divine powers. Extracting, crafting, battles, exploration, and most of the activities can be improved by your spells, and magic to facilitate the lives of the dwarves that faithfully follow you.
Too Magical
The game has a very simple, pixelated, 2D graphic, and will probably run on most machines with decent performance. Craft The World, is a very intuitive title, that has easy mechanics, making for a friendly title, even if it barely has any plot or narrative to add to its gameplay. Besides, the scarce story the title offers, players can feel overwhelmed with the number of genres, mechanics, and activities offered. While this is mainly a good thing, Craft The Word is not able to find its identity amidst all it proposes.
Conclusion
Craft The World is a fusion of so many titles, that it becomes hard to compare or recommend it based on one game alone, but if you like Terraria, World of Warcraft, Clash of Clans, Plants vs. Zombies, and Starbound you will enjoy the game, even if partially.
There are so many genres here that players will find it fun, and interesting, or overwhelming. The game fails to ultimately find its own identity and spread itself too thin, becoming a shallow of what could have been an interesting game.
PROS:
- Unique Fusion of Genres
- Interesting at First
- Friendly and Simple
- Diverse Mechanics and Features
CONS:
- Becomes Repetitive
- Shallow Title
- Poor Narrative
- Fails to Find Its Own Identity
