Garry's Mod

I have been thinking for a while how to go about reviewing Garry's Mod as this is a game that is really limitless when you think about it. This is brought to us by Valve, but it is the community that has kept it running and no matter what you can think of, chances are someone has created it in Garry's Mod!

What Is The Point?

Well, the point is to screw around and just do what you want. Valve has created a massive sandbox world and they give you all the tools that you need in order to do what you want. Want to use the gravity gun from Half-Life 2? Well, you can do that. Want to use the Portal gun from Portal? Well, you can do that too! Even before you get to the community-created content, you have a ton of things that you can mess around within this game.

Mayhem With Friends!

Garry's Mod has a very robust set of multiplayer modes that will keep you busy for a very long time. It is worth noting that some may require you to own another game such as Team Fortress 2 for example in order to play them. Do not worry, as there are many other games that are made to be played just with what Garry's Mod is offering you.

Valve has added tons of game modes here and some of my favorites are Trouble In Terrorist Town where you can be a detective trying to find criminals who are killing people. It also has the most fun and awesome version of “Prop Hunt” that I have ever had the pleasure to play. It really is stacked with stuff to do before you even get to what the community has to offer.

The Community Steps Up

Even if Valve did not have this game loaded with content, I would say that it is worth checking out alone for the content that the community has provided. I legit do not even know where to start in talking about this. if you are someone who is talented to make your own games, assets, and so on, Garry's Mod is pretty much limitless with what you can do. The only limit is your imagination. I am not really a “maker” more of a player so that is where I thrive.

To give you an example of how crazy this is. Just this morning I was playing some weird game where I was chasing down Peter Griffin from Family guy and trying to shoot him! You never know what the hell you are going to end up messing around with when you fire this up.

Pros:

• The only limit is your imagination
• Even without the community content, there is a lot to do here
• I like the way it uses some of the iconic stuff from Valve properties
• Some of the stuff you can do is insane
• Some great use of licensed properties!

Cons:

• It can be daunting knowing what to play!
• Not sure it is going to be for everyone

Imagine a world where you have a blank canvas and can literally create anything. In Garry’s Mod, you can build your own game down to some of the tiniest details. Choose how the physics of the game works, who the NPCs are, what kind of weapons are available, and so much more.

Not precisely a game

If you love open sandbox style worlds such as Minecraft, but want even more control over your gaming experience, Garry’s Mod has everything you need for hours of gaming fun.

Before we move on to describing what you can do in this game, it’s important to understand that Garry’s Mod isn’t a game in the common sense. It’s a physics sandbox originally meant to be a mod for Half-Life 2. It has since developed into a stand alone game, but it doesn’t have quests or story modes or anything you would typically expect in a game. Instead, you are absolutely free to explore the world and do your own thing, with few limits. You can create a robot made from individual parts, create machines with pully systems, or give you the freedom to create that one scenario no game ever has.

Garry’s Mod can do all that. Using the power of Half-Life-2’s amazing physics engine, it gives you the control to make almost anything you want happen. This open world style is part of what transcended it from simply a mod to a physics engine, to an outright game in its own right.

Create your own movie shorts

This sandbox game isn’t just popular because you can create your own games. You can also use it to create short movies as well. In fact, many of the short clips you’ve enjoyed on YouTube were probably created with Garry’s Mod.

A cult classic

Almost as important as the game itself is the community behind it. Garry’s Mod has sold over 9 million copies so far, and many of the people who play it are diehard fans. Garry, the developer of the game and its namesake, listens to community feedback and lets the community as a whole take the game in the direction they want it to go. This is truly one of the biggest things that shape how unique and interesting this game is. Since its inception in 2006, it has grown from a hobby a one person studio created in his spare time, to a full gaming experience.

If you went into Garry’s Mod expecting to be entertained through a guided experience, you’ll be disappointed. If you love sandbox adventures or have always dreamed of creating your own game however, Garry’s Mod will delight and amaze you without limitations.
