The Dragon Quest series has endured as an accessible JRPG for hardcore gamers and newcomers alike, and Dragon Quest Rivals (also known as Dragon Quest Rivals Ace) is no different. While the card combat game might be different from what the series is known for, there’s a lot to enjoy for fans of the Dragon Quest franchise.
A Quest For Cards
Fans of Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering will find themselves right at home with Dragon Quest Rivals. Much of the core mechanics are the same when compared to classic card combat games, albeit with a Dragon Quest aesthetic.
Players are able to select a deck made up from cards based on the Dragon Quest franchise. Every card has its own unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and it is up to the player to forge a deck (and a strategy) to help them win battles against their online opponents.
In the core gameplay, players must select a character as their leader, before using their deck to summon monsters and unleash attacks on their foes. Each leader has a unique Coup de Grâce skill, as well as cards exclusive to them. Ultimately, the goal in each battle is to knock your opponent’s HP bar down to zero, using the strategy of the cards you are dealt to achieve victory.
Every card has what is called an MP cost, which is taken from the players’ MP meters. At the start of each match, each player has 1 MP to use, and it increases by 1 each turn. Using up their MP, players activate cards to attack on and alter the battlefield. MP can also be used by the player’s leader to ‘Psyche Up’ and build Tension, which can be used to activate the leader’s ultimate ability.
Each monster and weapon card has a value for attack damage and overall health, which is used to determine which is victorious in a fight.
Cast of Characters
Fans of Dragon Quest XI, as well as the series in general will appreciate the game’s love for the Dragon Quest Franchise. There are dozens of recognisable characters throughout the series’ history, and die hard fans will delight in playing as their favourites with full voice acting for the first time ever.
The roster of characters includes: Alef, Alena, Meena, Torneko Taloon, Psaro, Terry, Jessica, Angelo, Veronica, Serena, Erik, and many, many others. Whether you’re a fan of the original Dragon Quest or you jumped into the series more recently, there’s characters here for everyone.
Although the game originally came out in 2017, Dragon Quest Rivals is still going strong. With a name update and rebrand, as well as a solo mode update in mid 2020, Dragon Quest Rivals still has a lot to offer gamers three years later.
That said, the game isn’t without its faults. Namely, the lack of English support really hampers the game’s overall appeal globally. Hopefully with the recent updates, Dragon Quest fans in the West might be able to hop into the card questin’ action fairly soon.
Clearly not for everyone, Dragon Quest Rivals is a must play for fans of the series. While there are certain roadblocks preventing the game from being an easy ride, the core gameplay makes Dragon Quest Rivals worth the potential language barrier.
