Sniper Elite V2
You know that Sniper Elite V2 was a special game as they remastered the thing quite recently! For its time the original game was considered one of the most authentic World War II shooters around. I love playing as a sniper and in that regard, this game certainly does not disappoint
The Dying Days Of War
Let’s start by talking about the campaign. I thought the campaign here was great. It is set during the end of World War II when we know about the advanced V2 rocket that the Germans had. The Russians want this tech for themselves and we are having none of it. There is more to the story than that, but that is the basics of it. The story is not as cinematic as say a Call of Duty WWII, but Sniper Elite V2 still manages to tell a very engaging story and it is a story that is easily going to last you ten or so hours so it is a very decent length.
Holding Your Breath
The real draw to a game like this is of course the sniping and it is great. I love sniping and this game is a joy to do it in! The gameplay on offer here is great. You have silenced pistols, machine guns, melee attacks, and so on. However, the game is at its best when you are concealed and lining up a long-range shot. A huge part of the fun of this is the way Sniper Elite V2 is so brutal with its kills. If you hold your breath you can do what is pretty much a bullet time type of deal. If you manage to nail the shot just right, you get this gory kill which is as brutal as some of the stuff we have seen in the recent Mortal Kombat games. The AI is a bit of a mixed bag. If you play the game on the highest difficulty the AI is ruthless and you better make each shot count. For those looking to test themselves and have a more realistic option, this is for you. I played on the standard difficulty and found it to be more fun, even if the AI was a tad dumb from time to time.
Sniping With Friends
While I would say that the campaign is the real draw in Sniper Elite V2. The multiplayer modes are also a lot of fun. You can work together taking down wave after wave of enemies which is fun. You can also play another mode where you make your way to the center of a map, picking up stuff as you go. The mode I had the most fun with is the Overwatch (no not THE Overwatch) mode. In this mode, you and a buddy are trying to get from point a to point b. One player plays as the sniper and the other is the soldier on the ground. The idea is that the one playing as “the Overwatch” is helping the soldier on the ground get through the stage. This mode is a great deal of fun and requires some real teamwork to get through it.
I think that Sniper Elite V2 is a great game I really do. It managed to capture being a sniper really well and it is a lot of fun. With that being said, I would have to say that the remastered version of the game might be the way to go. The visuals are greatly improved and it adds a few new bells and whistles as well. Not that there is anything wrong with the original of course.
- The campaign is very engaging
- The brutal slow-motion kills are awesome!
- You can adjust the difficulty to suit your play style
- The multiplayer modes are a lot of fun
- The gunplay is very satisfying
- I do feel the remastered version is better
- The AI can sometimes be pretty dumb on the lower difficulty setting
