When you’re on the hunt for a side-scrolling adventure to sink your time into, you consider a number of factors before you commit to one title. You might look for a game that offers Metroidvania style backtracking aspect to its format. Alternatively, you might like a game that uses a 2.5D art style such as Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil done so beautifully. However, you may in the small collective of gamers that look for something a little more gory, more sexual and explicit. Well, Sword of Ryanosis does all this and more, making it an ideal choice for fans of brutal hentai.
This game plays rather like any 2D side scrolling adventure such as Klonoa 2: Lunateas Veil, Tomba or the bonus levels from the Crash Bandicoot series. However, instead of focusing on platforming and using a cartoonish and whimsical art style, this game uses a much more mature tone with a hand-drawn anime art style and gameplay mechanics that focus around combat above all else.
Behind The Times
The games art style and general presentation is the first thing that will grab your attention but sadly for all the wrong reasons. The art style uses a hand-drawn anime approach with backgrounds that belong on GBA titles making up the rest of the environment. The character models are generic, rough around the edges and unnecessarily juvenile in their dress sense and their animations. This is to be expected of a hentai based game but even with that in mind, it’s poorly done. The UI is the only part of the presentation worth any praise at all really. It’s simple, gives the player all the info they need and doesn’t clutter the screen with a mass of content. This would be a much more poignant point to make if there were something worth looking at behind the HUD. All in all, it’s a visual display akin to a poorly made flash game.
Provokes Players Without Warrant
Players are open to dark and gritty twists and turn in a story. Hell, within this genre they are more open than most. However, when you have a game that lets the player to spike, rape, amputate, purify and rape again after all these heinous acts, its more than enough to turn off even the most open-minded and easy-going players. You could argue that its a game for a niche brand of player but that would suggest that some amount of thought went into this game. The gameplay is also downright terrible. Considering how far games have come in the last two decades, it baffles us just how someone can release a game that is so basic in nature. You walk from left to right, you can do a series of attacks and animations and the goal is to not take hits and get to your next destination. This is like an even more primitive Streets of Rage in this respect and let me remind you, that game was made in the 1980’s.
Juvenile Drivel
This game is as close to garbage as you are likely to find out there in the world of gaming. It would have scored higher if the story was in any way palatable, it would have gained points if the gameplay was better than a cheap flash game.
It might have even scored better if the art style wasn’t so simple and generic and it’s worth noting that this is the best part of this game. Avoid this one if you respect your time and your mental well-being.
Pros
- The somewhat palatable art style
- Uncluttered UI
Cons
- Brutal and juvenile story and content.
- The gameplay is laughably basic
