Gameplay

So, the gameplay in this title is actually fantastic. A game that focuses strongly on giving an enjoyable challenge to the players rather that running you through a strict retelling of second world war history.

The missions that comprise the real campaigns are fictional, this allows for a far more fluid retelling that does not have to have that unbending adherence to history. Like Company of Heroes 3 or Steel Division 2, this game takes it to the limit.

With simple but complete control, The Troop embodies all that we love from classic tabletop war games combined with the technology and cleverness afforded by the digital format. You maintain absolute control over your units and can maneuver them with such fine detail that they will carry out your plan to the letter.

Combat is challenging, the enemy has the same rules as you and discovers things at the same speed. No special care has been given to ensure the player or the enemy AI has an advantage, thus all victories and losses are yours and yours alone. This game is all about tactics, not numbers, so you’ve got to pay attention and play properly if you want to win. You will be surprised time and time again at how you can customize exactly what you want your units to do and how you want them to do it.

Visuals

The visuals of this title are certainly not the best that I have ever seen, but I will not say that they are bad. Like many war games, everything has a harsh filter over it to look grey and sad all the time. Although that is a good way to convey the emotional weight of a world war, it is not the most realistic thing in the world. It makes targets a little hard to see sometimes but that’s okay.

Difficulty

So, there is no difficulty options in this game. Instead of making things super easy or super hard with the push of a button, you instead are given the ability to play as you want by controlling available features. This lets you tailor the experience with far more detail and freedom than I’ve really ever seen before in a game. If you want one heck of a challenge, you will definitely find it here.
