Since the release of The Wolf Among Us in 2013, there have been a few setbacks concerning the development of The Wolf Among Us 2, most notably the closure of Telltale Games in 2018. When this initially occurred, many fans assumed that it was lights out for the series as a whole. The first game was an impressive title, earning a 10/10 on Steam while maintaining a lower bound score of at least 8/10 or 4.2/5 on most other media sites. It consisted of five episodic installments utilizing graphic novel styled gameplay, similar to Dontnod’s 2014 release Life is Strange, but closer in gameplay to the Danganronpa series.
This is primarily due to the fact that, like most other Telltale games, the gameplay is centered on quick-time events that help bring a visual novel to life. Keeping this success in mind, the same expectations were applied to The Wolf Among Us 2 – gameplay and progression would be the same, though the story would depend on your decisions in the first game. All of that seemed to be lost once the studio closed in 2018.
What Happens Now?
To fans’ surprise and relief in 2019, the Telltale brand was miraculously saved by LCG Entertainment, who had acquired the company. As a result, production restarted on The Wolf Among Us 2 and there have been some recent updates as to what players can expect in terms of a release date as recently as December 10, 2020. The update was nothing large, Telltale’s spokesperson merely stated that, “What we can say is we are developing the entire season at once and there is more to do before we’re ready to show what’s next for the Fabletown gang.” With all this in mind, lets take a minute to see what we can expect from The Wolf Among Us 2, what could be improved, and at least a bit about the first installment.
What’s Next for Fabletown?
The long and the short of it is that very little is known about the upcoming Telltale title. From developer, spokesperson, and even other theorist’s speculation, all that is really known is that it will definitely feature a story heavy narrative set in the same universe with similar characters to the first. To keep this review spoiler free, I’ll avoid going over too many of the events from The Wolf Among Us, but your decisions will have a heavy impact on the progression even going into the second installment (the actual depth of this statement is yet to be expanded on).
You will most likely again assume the role of Bigby Wolf, previously known as the Big Bad Wolf in the hidden city of Fabletown, where all other fairytale creatures/characters currently live in the depths of 1980’s New York City. Following the first murder in Fabletown in many years, as Bigby it was your mission to find out what happened and what this could mean for every other resident in the near future. Teaming up with Mayor Ichabod Crane, Mr. Toad, and Snow White, time is running short to figure out who’s responsible, who could be next, and how deep this all runs.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is yet to be released, and yet to receive even a release date. Production has no doubt been slowed to some extent due to the ongoing COVID crisis, but the recent progress on vaccines means we’ll likely receive more concrete information in the next year. For now, looking at the gameplay and setting of The Wolf Among Us, the second installment would definitely be worth your while if you’re interested in crime thrillers, fairytales, and all the murder and corruption in-between.
Pros/Cons based on current information available and what is likely to be a part of TWAU2, not 100% confirmed.
