Role-Playing Titles come in many shapes and forms, but one of our favorite variations of the genre is are the turn-based ones. Overhype Studios developed this game called Battle Brothers and released it in 2017. It is a tactical RPG set in a medieval world with many fantasy elements involved. There's a lot of liberty on what you can do in the game but it also uses something not often seen in many fantasy role-playing games, and we are talking about a procedurally generated open world campaign. So, let's see what Battle Brothers is all about right now.

About the game

As we mentioned before, Battle Brothers is an RPG turn-based game in which we can control our own mercenary company. Starting with just the bare minimum, we have to get all the resources to toughen up our team and their equipment as well as level up and get strong with new skills and better weapons and armors. But as mercenaries, an important part of everyday life is trying to earn enough coin. As you get more money you'll also want to hire more mercenaries to add to your guild and be the most feared and incredible band of mercenaries out there.

Each battle in the game is completely different, and you'll have to think very well about your every move. Since the missions are procedurally generated, you'll be forced to do the best you can with what you have at hand each time, so the best course of action is to be sure to keep your mercenaries in the best shape possible. Having the best equipment, getting them to be as strong as possible, and being able to use the best equipment money can buy.

It also differs a lot from other games in this same genre thanks to its classless system. Characters gain experience by winning in the turn-based combat system, and as they level up they can get generally stronger and they can learn new abilities, but in actuality, you can change the different specialties of the characters by changing their equipment. sure, the abilities associate more with independent "classes' ' but they are actually interchangeable at any given moment.

Strategy is key

In many ways, this game is similar to titles like Fire Emblem, but at the same time, the procedurally generated affects all the mechanics in the gameplay. Fire Emblem is a great franchise of games, but it is in no way random or procedurally generated. This means you could easily grab a guide from the web, and get through the entire game, sure, you'll need some luck too. But if the game is procedurally generated, there's no one to ask for help, you'll need to work your strategy in real-time.

Battle Brothers is a great strategy RPG game, it is very challenging and will certainly give you some headaches. But this also means it is really rewarding to progress and grow in the game. The classless system will force you to level up your characters in a more balanced way and to also have some idea of management. There's a good amount of content, characters, enemies, levels, weapons, and abilities. It is a very complex game.
