Deponia

Deponia is a point and click adventure game that manages to bring players into a story of love, betrayal, honor, humor and sacrifice. While playing through this story, you’ll undoubtedly find yourself fully immersed in its brilliantly animated world. In Deponia, you play as Rufus, a headstrong but naïve hero that has to sum up his bravery in order to protect his home from a mysterious ruling class. As you journey through this tale, you’ll get to meet a brilliant cast of characters to keep you entertained.

Created by Daedalic Entertainment, a German Studio, Deponia is the first installment in a series of video games that follow Rufus and Goal’s tale as they try to curb the doomed fate of Rufus’ home planet.

Story

In Deponia, ‘Deponia’ is the home planet to our hero, Rufus. If you’ve ever seen the movie ‘Elysium’, the premise is quite similar. Deponia is a sort of “dumping ground” planet for the floating city called ‘Elysium’. The citizens of Elysium live a lavish life at the unknown expense of Deponia’s residents. The only citizens of Elysium that are aware of Deponia’s true nature are the Organnon.

The Organnon are a militant organization that oversees the trash dumping activities in Deponia. In the story, Rufus, like most citizens of Deponia has a dream of flying over to Elysium for a better life. When Rufus finally decides to act out on his dream, he begins a sequence of events that lead him to Goal. Goal is another central character to this story thanks to her essential status to Organnon. As you uncover the mysteries in the plot, you’ll get to learn more about Organnon’s true intentions. Likewise, you will also get to see Rufus and Goal grow into better versions of themselves compared to the beginning of their adventure.

Gameplay

In Deponia, the mechanics are pretty simple, but not lazily built. The developers over at Daedalic Entertainment ensured that they were able to put an interesting spin on the point and click adventure genre.

The objects you’ll encounter in the game can usually be manipulated to trigger some events, overcome a small challenge or even used to create cool new items when combined with other parts of your inventory. You can even talk with people in the game for some more clues during an adventure. Alternatively, the NPCs are still fun to interact with for some regular trivia. The game basically requires a mouse to left-click on an object or person to trigger an interaction. However, right-clicking will allow you to examine the stuff around you. Also, a hint system allows players to know the right steps to take in an environment.
