Samorost 3 is a 2016 point-and-click game developed by Amanita Design, following a small alien who solves puzzles in a bid to explore different planets.
Samorost 3’s most striking feature is its gorgeous design. All the game’s planets have a distinct palette and atmosphere, rendered in a beautifully meticulous, fantastical style. Every landscape feature small details that reward close examination, and which sometimes play a part in the game’s puzzles. The worlds of Samorost 3 also features numerous whimsical characters, who manage to make an impression despite having no dialogue. These areas are endlessly fascinating, and getting to know them is just as rewarding as solving one of the game’s puzzles.
Samorost 3 features numerous unique puzzles, which generally require lateral thinking and interaction with the game’s environment to complete. Identifying what these puzzles are and how to solve them can be a somewhat difficult proposition, often requiring some degree of trial and error. This will please players who enjoy games heavy on self-guided exploration and problem-solving. However, players used to a more direct or clear-cut experience may find themselves frustrated. Thankfully, the game does offer a book of hints, which can be quite helpful for players stuck on how to proceed.
Notably, none of Samorost 3’s puzzles feature any spoken or written words. Instead, the game communicates information through diagrams, music, and vocalizations. This choice makes the player pay close attention to visual cues and ensures that the game’s thoughtfully produced music and sound design never fades into the background. The lack of text also means that Samorost 3 is accessible to players regardless of what languages they speak. The one downside of this choice to eschew text is that the game’s menu only features symbols, meaning that players may be confused about how to access achievements or save the game. To avoid encountering issues, players would be advised to quickly look up the game’s controls before starting to play.
Although Samorost 3 is a sequel to two previous Samorost games, no prior familiarity with the series is needed to enjoy it. Samorost 3 may be too unsettling or opaque for young children, but older kids would likely be entranced by the game’s imaginative worlds. Samorost 3 is available on Steam, Humble Bundle, ios, and Android.
