I Hate This Game

How on earth do I describe something like I Hate This Game? This is a fun PC indie title that has elements of platforming, puzzle-solving, and a whole bunch of weird and strange sprinkled all over it for good measure. The idea of the game is that each level changes up the gameplay so you are never sure of what is going to be thrown your way next.

Pixilated Finesse

The art style that they have gone for with this game is a very basic pixelated one and it is fantastic. I really dig the minimalistic art style that they have chosen here as I feel that it fits the theme of the game very well. I actually think that I Hate This Game might have lost a bit of its charm had they gone for something a bit higher quality in the visual department.

How Did I Get Stuck In Here?

The story of the game is a lot of fun, some dude clicked on a click bate heading of “the best game ever” and somehow ended up stuck inside his computer! Now the only way to get out is to beat each of the over 100 levels that are thrown his way. The story is kind of silly, but that fits the tone of the game very well. It is not a story-driven masterpiece by any means, but I do like that they have at least given us a reason to be playing all these random levels.

What To Do, What To Do Indeed

Each level is different and poses a different gameplay challenge. There is a door that you need to get out of and you have to do something before you can do it. At its most basic this might be some kind of platforming you have to do. Yet there is also a ton more stuff you have to wrack your brain around. A few that I remember were trying to pick the right phase of the moon, one where I was stuck in a TV and had to change the channels, one where I had some brothers and had to get them to the exit to and one where I had to type what looked like code onto the screen.

The game always keeps you guessing and while some of the things you have to do are very obvious some are really tricky to get your head around. The basic controls are easy enough, you just use the keyboard as you would expect so right of the bat, you can at least control the game easy enough, it is figuring out the puzzles that is the tricky part.

I was not sure what to expect when I started playing, I Hate This Game I had a feeling it was going to be a game that was unfairly difficult just for the sake of being frustrating, but that is not the case at all. It is a very challenging game, but there is always a solution sometimes this solution is easier to figure out than others. In all, I had a lot of fun with this and if you are looking for something a bit different to play, you can do a lot worse than this.

  • Tons of levels to play through
  • There is a lot of variety to the levels
  • I liked the simple pixelated art style
  • The premise of the game is fun
  • It is challenging, but never feels unfair

  • I do wish the story was a bit more padded out
  • Some might not like the basic art style of the game
