Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode is a brilliant role-playing game in one of the most beloved franchises known to man. Get ready to live through your childhood dream of being a Digimon tamer as you take control of Taiga, a young Digimon tamer who must raise his Digimon, battle with others, and, eventually, find out what is happening with the mysterious Blackening Phenomenon and a terrible creature known as Vitium. This is not only a brilliant introduction to the franchise if you haven’t been in it before, but it’s also an excellent RPG overall and has a great story. If this sounds like something you’d find interesting, keep reading as we get further into it.
Gameplay
So, this is a third-person, turn-based, role-playing game set in the Digimon world. You play as Taiga, who is digitized and taken into an online game, you must explore the world and defeat many of the enemies that occupy it. There is a tremendous amount of exploration here as you traverse the ruined online world that feels like a post apocalypse rather than a thriving online game. It has a feel similar to NieR: Automata with its visual aesthetic and level layout. As you travel, you will encounter many monsters and will battle them in a style that is similar to Pokémon Scarlet, but with a little more freedom of movement.
You have stats that you will need to increase. If you choose to increase your Brain Stat, your Digimon will be able to use abilities that give them greater freedom over the battlefield and make them significantly stronger. While battling, you will need to keep an eye on the stats of your Digimon as they are able to get hungry, sick, injured, and, provided you don’t tend to their needs, they could even die.
Visuals
As I stated before, Digimon World Re:Digitize Decode has a game world that looks like a post apocalypse and I am absolutely here for it. The visuals were great for their time, but how the developers used what they had is a testament to great game design. There are sections of the environment that look like Las Vegas has fallen into the sands, rain tracks are overgrown with grass in the countryside, and large factories that are empty save for a few hazards. There is something distinctly unsettling about how empty it all feels, but in a way that lends credence to a world where something has gone wrong as opposed to a game that was unfinished. The Digimon themselves are rendered well and all look unique enough. There isn’t much to say about them.
Story
The story follows the protagonist Taiga, a young Digimon tamer who must battle through the digital world and try to put a stop to the nefarious forces that threaten it. For a game in this genre, the story is par for the course, and it fills itself with malarkey about friendship being the true power and only you can be the one to save everyone. As you would expect from any decent RPG, it’s a power fantasy. This story won’t break any molds, but you will enjoy it for the most part.
A perfect addition to the franchise and an overall great RPG. Fun for all ages and provides hours of content. Can’t ask for more.
