I was very impressed when I saw the trailer for Guild of Ascension, so this is a game I have been keeping up to date on for a while. It is a tactical RPG, but it also has a lot of action in it too, and a gameplay system that is a tad different from what most games in this genre offer which is pretty cool. There are rogue lite elements, crafting, bosses, and more here in this game and if you like tactical-based RPGs, this is a game that could be perfect for you.
Climbing The Tower
I have to be honest and say that I am not exactly sure how story driven Guild of Ascension is going to end up being by the time the credits roll. The game is about ascending this giant tower to try and get as much loot as you can, all the while taking down the dangerous enemies and bosses that are inside of it.
Party Like It's 1999!
The visuals and the presentation in general here are great. The first time I saw this game I got a very Dreamcast feel from the way that it looked. From the various different character models to the way everything was so bright. Guild of Ascension is a fine-looking game that has a ton of personality and an awesome fantasy aesthetic. The different floors of the tower can have different backgrounds such as a cave or a forest which is neat, but I wish there was a bit more variety here.
Making It All Work
As far as the gameplay goes, there is a lot going on here. You control two characters and you need to try and get used to making them act in harmony. If you have played a tactics-based game before, you should be ok here. You will need to fight enemies and plan your attacks accordingly. Guild of Ascension has a very challenging combat system, but this is where the game is different from most other tactical RPGs!
10 Seconds To Think
One of the most interesting aspects of the gameplay here is that you have 10 seconds to plan a move and then 10 seconds to run around and enact it and here you can use a more action orientated approach where you hack and slash away! This sounds weird and until you have played it is kind of hard to imagine how it works, but it is a cool system and one that certainly makes Guild of Ascension stand out from other similar games.
All About The Tower
After each round, you can go back to your guild with your spoils, and here you can craft new items, weapons, and so on to help you progress. Of course, if you die, you run the risk of losing what you have earned so heading back and making sure you take care of business is key to progressing in the game.
A tactics based rogue lite RPG game can have a hard time standing out from the crowd, but Guild of Ascension with its interesting style, premise, and that combat system is doing well to do that. I really do applaud them for trying to do something different here and I am sure fans of the genre are going to greatly appreciate that.
