In 1998 Hot Wheels fans were treated to the digital realization of a childhood dream. Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver was a PC game that allowed players to race America’s favorite miniature cars on multiple tracks. Player’s could put themselves in the driver’s seat of some of the most popular Hot Wheels vehicles and perform awesome aerial stunts while exploring the games wide variety of tracks. The game was fan service to those loyal to the Hot Wheels brand. It even came with a special collector’s edition Hot Wheel Car.
Multiple Ways to Play
The game allows players to experience three modes of play. The first is the Championship Mode. Where players will compete in time-based challenges. Gamers who are successfully at meeting the game’s demanding time challenges will be rewarded with two bonus tracks. The second is a track creation mode that allows players to piece together their own racing track in a digital garage. The third and final mode is a single race mode. This will allow players to use all their unlocked vehicles on any of the game 6 tracks. Initially, players will have access to only 4 tracks and 3 cars but, by meeting the challenges of the Championship mode players can access up to 12 real life vehicles and 6 tracks.
Cars and Tracks
The games vehicles are more than just avatars. Each vehicle’s performance is modeled with statistics that make each car a unique driving experience. Part of the challenge of Hot Wheels STD, is finding the right car for the right track. Cars have different speed and handling and each one will feel unique as you zip along the plastic track.
Players will race each beautifully rendered track. The tracks are full of twists and turns that provide the player with opportunities to perform awesome stunts. Players will have control over the car’s direction which is mapped to the arrow keys. Players will also have a gas and brake control. Each track also has some unexpected obstacles that you would expect to find around a Hot Wheel track in a home. Players will have to avoid house pets and other inconveniences on their way to their top time.
Fun Game with a Serious Challenge
Time is not the only factor that plays into your proficiency as a driver. Remember this is game is called Stunt Track Driver. You will also be able to control your car in the air. Physics be damned, you will be able to make your car twist and flip in the most unrealistic ways you can imagine. Landing these Feynman defying jumps will increase you stunt score while the game visual presentation treats you a fireworks display as a reward for sticking your landing.
Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver isn’t all fun and games. This title has some serious challenge as well. Performing high flying, law of physics defying stunts may be fun but, failure to properly stick your landing will result in your car flying helplessly off the track. Each failed stunt will result in a time penalty and in World Championship mode the time requirements are so tight that more than a few flops will result in failure.
Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver is a rare gem. Matel and the games developers provided Hot Wheels fans with an awesome platform to enjoy their favorite four wheeled past-time in a digital world. The tracks are fun, engaging and exciting. Each vehicle has its own niche which adds to the replay value of the game.
