Video gamers rarely come across a title that perfectly captures the spirit of some culture and then gives an all-new game experience to boot—so do it with Capcom's Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess. It offers up a blend of action and strategy set against a backdrop steeped in Japanese mythology. This single-player experience welcomes players to a world in which the cycles of day and night rule the rhythm of survival, while the veil between the realms of mortals and spirit grows thin with every setting sun.

The Call of the Kami

Fundamentally, Kunitsu-Gami is a game of duality. By day, players guide Soh in his task to purify villages and prepare defenses. By night, Kunitsu-Gami becomes something altogether different: a pounding heartbeat of tension as otherworldly entities known as the Seethe emerge to try and corrupt the land. It makes for an interesting beat to play out, having players think very determinedly about resource management and tactical positioning.

Mt. Kafuku is not just a location; it is full of Japanese cultural components, truly living and breathing the world. From haunting strains of traditional music to undulating movements of Kagura dance, Kunitsu-Gami immerses players in the rich tapestry of Japanese folklore and aesthetics.

A Symphony of Swords and Spirits

Where Kunitsu-Gami really shines is in its combat system. Soh's swordplay is a dance of death that's beautiful to behold, somewhat reminiscent of the fluid combat to be had in something like Onimusha, but with a flair all its own. The addition of villager allies adds a layer of strategy to the proceedings, elevating the gameplay beyond simple hack-and-slash into something more thoughtful. Not only must players worry about the placement and role of these computer-controlled characters, but each battle takes on interesting differences in makeup.

Those lone Torii gates that pop up at nightfalls—the Seethe is their brand of varied challenges and a formidable foe. To beat different enemy types, there need to be dissimilar tactics employed by players, being extremely vigilant and inquisitive to experiment with several strategies. All of these action and strategy fusions go on to make a game loop quite in many ways both engaging and satisfying.

Review: 9/10

Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess offers, refreshingly, a unique take on the action-strategy genre, smoothly meshing central combat with thoughtfulness from strategic elements. It deeply bathes players in a world full of Japanese cultural influences, and with its day-night cycle, there is a rather unique structure to the gameplay that will provide a fine line between prep and action.
