Explore, craft, and thrive in the colorful plains of a distant planet in Lost Nova, the latest game from developer Jon Nielsen and HopFrog. Featuring some lovely visuals and a fascinating world to explore, this is a curious game that might be right up your alley if you enjoy relaxed survival games.
Considering the amount of care that clearly went into each of Lost Nova’s designs and mechanics, it’s surprising to see that the game hasn’t made a bigger buzz in the survival gaming fandom. Let’s take a look at what we can expect from this cheery game when it releases sometime next year.
Color Out of Space
There’s plenty of great games to choose from in the crafting and survival genre. Considering how competitive this fandom can be, new titles in the genre have to come up with some unique ideas if they hope to stand out from the crowd. Thankfully, Lost Nova’s developers understood this to perfection.
To put it simply, Lost Nova is the visual opposite of Don’t Starve. Whereas that game has a stark visual style, Lost Nova might be one of the happiest-looking games to ever be developed. Pastel colors are nearly everywhere, and characters have a distinctly soft look that wouldn’t be too out of place in some children’s coloring book.
Craft and Mine
Another thing that sets Lost Nova apart from the rest of the survival genre is its focus on crafting and gathering over combat. In fact, there’s little confrontation to speak of, with the game focusing more on looking for supplies than fighting creatures.
Players who are familiar with the No Man’s Sky formula might find some of Lost Nova’s mechanics to be quite familiar, namely the use of a laser gum to mine for resources and the whole “gotta fix your ship to escape an alien planet” plot. However, Lost Nova excels in something that No Man’s Sky somewhat lacks: rich and well-written NPCs. You play as Mia, an astronaut who gets stranded on an alien planet during her vacation. That said, Mia is not alone on this mysterious planet; she soon finds that there are many other folks stranded in this distant place, almost like there’s a supernatural force that attracts them to this location.
Laidback Escape
Most of Lost Nova revolves around chilling on a fantastical alien planet. Survival and all those pesky things that get on your nerves are mostly ignored here, and that comes with a peculiar set of pros and cons. For one, casual players will appreciate the fact that the game is very easy to play: there’s very little skill required to see most of what Lost Nova has to offer.
That said, this relaxed gameplay can lead to boredom for more seasoned players. The fact that there’s very little combat and the overall tone of the game might be somewhat slow for those players looking for a more traditional survival experience. Overall, Lost Nova is a game that’s better suited for casual players who prefer a game that looks nice to one that’s punishingly difficult.
Lost Nova’s beautiful art style and relaxed gameplay make it the perfect title for casual players who are interested in a relaxed survival experience.
