Out of all of the major sports to have strong video game line-ups, tennis games tend to be lower down the rankings. When compared to other major sports franchise titles, the most one-on-one sport in the world tends to pale in comparison. However, the 2022 release of Matchpoint - Tennis Championships might change this for good.
This game looks to introduce many of the features needed to keep a sports game interesting for fans of the genre. This game, published by Kalypso Media, looks like it could be a really interesting addition to the sports gaming world.
Taking the competitive side of tennis seriously
In the past, one of the biggest issues with other tennis games has been the lack of competitive zeal. It has often been hard to find the kind of rivalries that we find on the court in the real sport. However, the development of an exciting new career mode might just change all of that. Matchpoint - Tennis Championships will offer a career mode not unlike something you might find in NBA2K or FIFA, complete with a new and developed rivalry system.
Tennis is big on rivalries, and so this could be a great addition to help add some extra energy to the career mode. Since many other sports games focus almost entirely on the online aspect, too, it is nice to see a game coming out that looks to have career mode as its primary focus.
Exciting gameplay paired with a fleshed out career mode (8/10)
From what we have seen and handled of Matchpoint - Tennis Championships so far, we are very impressed. It looks great, it feels smooth to play, and the action is probably the best we have seen in a tennis game so far. Other tennis games of the past would either get the presentation right or the on-court experience right. By contrast, though, this game looks to have managed to get both correct.
The gameplay feels slick, with your player moving around comfortably on the court and in-sync with your pad movements. The connection with the ball feels really authentic, too, ensuring that rallies remain fun and engaging. The controls are simple enough to pick up, as well, with the control scheme less confusing than previous tennis games.
Overall, we have found our time with Matchpoint - Tennis Championships so far to be quite interesting. There is a lot to like about the game, not least the fact that it will be part of the Xbox Game Pass program from day one, so it should be easily accessible for most tennis fans. While it might be coming out a little too late to coincide with Wimbledon season, you can watch the Grand Slam and then heat yourself up for the US Open by playing this excellent title.
