Many games have come up with some strange combinations in the effort to be original. Golfie is the latest game to try a new combination for their game, mixing golfing with deck building and rogue lite styles. Your goal is to battle through 18 holes to defeat the game, with each hole being procedurally generated so it is never the same. You’ll have to use your wits to get through the holes and finish the game. The game employs cards you can use to give yourself boosts. They might give your shots more strength or combine your cards to make new and unique abilities.

If you fail to complete a golf course at or above par, you’ll lose some energy for the additional shots needed. Lose too much energy and the game is over.

Unique gameplay

The world is awash with sporting games, and golf is a popular one. Unlike Mario Golf or even the more serious PGA Tour 2K21, Golfie has combined a variety of unique elements to create a fresh new game. The novelty of being able to parachute your golf ball to safety or blast it off with jets can make golfing so much more satisfying. Despite these magical components, the game is physics based and the ball will fall as one might expect without the addition of these boosters.

Whimsical graphics

The game features bright colors and smooth graphics, which are reminiscent of games like Angry Birds. Although there’s no breathtaking realism or detail to it, the game doesn’t pretend to be something it is not, which makes the graphics feel appropriate.

Currently single player only

Golfie is in early access right now, and features are limited. As of right now, the game only offers single player modes to play in. A variety of new modes, including multi-player, are planned for the future. The developers do provide a road map to the completion of the game.

Some bugs

The game does have quite a few bugs. The ball will sometimes go from a complete stop and roll off the map. Island levels meant for later in the game can sometimes pop up early, and islands can sometimes end up getting smooshed together in odd ways.

The good news is the developers appear to be aware of and on top of the bugs. They have a list kept on their steam page of known issues and are working to fix them. Bugs are to be expected during early release, as the nature of early release itself is for a game to be shown off before it is quite ready for the big time.

Despite the bugs, this is a solid golfing game that sports fans will enjoy. Adding a bit of magic to the game goes a long way to taking it from the same dreary sports simulator into something a bit more fun. While there’s still a great deal more to be done to the game, it is worth playing as it is now.
