One could argue that Sexy Hiking is part of the golden age of incredibly frustrating cult internet games. You could even go as far as to say that this is the basis for all the irritating, silly, challenging rage games that have become prominent in the last few years. It's one of those games you'll love as much as you hate, which is probably why it never got picked up for a widespread console release.
Let's be clear. There is absolutely nothing sexy about Sexy Hiking. It's visually unappealing, the development standards are lackluster, and the character looks like it's emerged from a Humpty Dumpty picture book drawn on MS Paint. So why does Sexy Hiking have the means to be a cult classic? Well, I've just given you three good reasons. But let's explore more.
The Egg and Hammer
Where do we start with Sexy Hiking? Let's dive into the obvious: this game is neither sexy nor about hiking. It's a physics-based platformer where your sole objective is to get to the top of a single level. No, you won't die failing, but screwing up implies starting right from the beginning. It doesn't sound too tricky. Right?
Wrong. Sexy Hiking might be one of the most frustratingly tricky internet games ever to hit the world wide web. The only way to accomplish your goal is to have over obstacles using a hammer controlled by a mouse that requires an inhuman amount of focus. 99% of players will probably give up within the first five minutes of the game, citing an impossible control schematic with an ungodly amount of hurdles to cross.
The comically drawn graphics don't give it any redeeming factors, either. However, you could argue that Sexy Hiking is a true masterpiece of game design. It's simple, to the point, and does what a classic video game should do - provide a challenge. It's a game where if you can keep your rage to a minimum during gameplay, you'll find yourself immersed in the objective of reaching the top.
Others will say it's far too hard to accomplish and instantly write the game off as a pile of garbage. Sexy Hiking easily could be one of the most polarizing games in internet history. However, its significance doesn't go unnoticed, considering many games today cite this title as the inspiration behind their indie offerings.
The Antithesis of Sexy Time
Coming up with a conclusion about whether you should play Sexy Hiking is tricky. On the one hand, you have a game where it's a Mastercraft in minimalist game design. On the other, you've got gameplay that's so frustrating and annoying that why would you waste time dealing with a rage-inducing experience?
The one defining factor about whether you should play the game is that Sexy Hiking is essentially the inspiration for the wildly popular Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy. If you're interested in learning about the rights of cult indie titles, this game is a must-play. If you'd prefer not to spend your day raging at your monitor and smashing keyboards, perhaps you best play something else.
