Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96, better known simply as Micro Machines 96, brings the classic top-down racing gameplay of the Micro Machines series to new heights. I found myself hooked by the chaotic, miniature tracks and array of creative vehicles you can race. With multiplayer action for up to 8 players, Micro Machines 96 is a blast with friends.

The core racing gameplay follows the Micro Machines formula of racing miniature vehicles through household environments like bathrooms, pool tables, and breakfast tables. I've always loved the dollhouse-like tracks filled with gigantic obstacles like cereal boxes and rubber duckies ever since I played Micro Machines V4.

Micro Machines 96 doesn't disappoint with its selection of 16 vehicles and 8 new tracks to conquer. Maneuvering a powerboat through a bubbly bathtub or navigating a dump truck across a messy bedroom floor never gets old. The presentation also shines with vibrant, toy-like visuals and upbeat music.

Micro Masters of Mayhem

One of my favorite additions in Micro Machines 96 is the assortment of chaotic game modes for up to 8 players. The main multiplayer attraction is the Share Games mode, where players take control of color-coded vehicles. It becomes a cooperative scramble to position at least one of your team's cars in the top half before they drive off-screen.

These shared scrambles create heated moments comparable to the best Mario Kart battles. You’ll be strategizing with your partner one second and shouting at them the next. I also enjoyed Knockout races, where the last-place driver gets eliminated after each lap until only one racer remains. The multiplayer thrills of Micro Machines are better than ever in 96.

Matchbox Customization

While the core racing is as fun as ever, I was disappointed by the lack of single-player modes compared to past Micro Machines games. There is no traditional championship or story mode, with the main single-player attraction being Time Trials. Trying to set new personal bests offers some replayability, but racing alone on the chaotic tracks feels hollow without others to bounce around.

I also wanted the option to customize my racer or vehicles, like selecting a matchbox-style paint job. Tiny details like that would have helped the game’s toy-inspired style. Fortunately, Micro Machines 96 does introduce a track-builder mode that fans of customization will adore.

Household Havoc

The selection of creatively designed tracks steals the show in Micro Machines 96. Zipping through the nooks and crannies of everyday locations like a kitchen or garage with 10+ racers is consistently exciting. Discovering alternate routes hidden behind cereal boxes or finding ways to use household objects to your advantage never gets old.

There is also enough variety between themes that you won’t easily memorize placements for the 16 tracks. The only issue with the game's presentation lies in its top-down view. As great as this is for showing the Micro Machines's diminutive sizes, it makes the game harder to control than, say, Mario Kart 64.

With its focus on multiplayer thrills, Micro Machines 96 is a must-play party game for racing fans. Just don't expect to be blown away by racing solo in your tiny car.
