In the chaotic world of Monster Bullets, you're not just a shooter – you're a precision monster hunter navigating a nightmare landscape of bizarre creatures and impossible challenges. Also, everything looks as if it was made in Microsoft Paint, and that's always a plus in my book.
From the moment you load into your first procedurally generated map, Monster Bullets reveals itself as something special. Drawing inspiration from high-octane shooters like ULTRAKILL and Doom, the game elevates the monster-hunting genre with its intricate mechanics and mind-bending creature design that keeps you perpetually on the edge of your seat.
Bullet Ballet
The core idea behind Monster Bullets is pretty simple: kill monsters. However, a good hunter picks the right tool for every job, and in this game, your bullets are your tools of the trade. Instead of picking from a myriad of different weapons as you do in Doom Eternal, you only need a small arsenal with different bullets to face the entities in this game.
The procedural map generation ensures no two runs feel identical. One moment you're navigating tight cavern corridors, the next you're weaving through dense forest undergrowth, always with the knowledge that something unexpected lurks just beyond your line of sight. This unpredictability elevates the game from a simple shooter to a truly dynamic hunting experience.
Bestiary of Nightmares
Now, the visuals are where the game gets really interesting. And by interesting I mean creative. Instead of going for hyperrealism (or even just regular realism,) Monster Bullets offers a quirky approach to enemy design with its charming 2D sprites. As I mentioned before, the game isn't quite the looker, but it has a certain "allure."
Look, I know not every game can look like modern DOOM, but you might get a bit of a whiplash once you see how this game looks. If you're the type of gamer who demands top-notch visuals, then stay well away from Monster Bullets. However, if you can look past its visual shortcomings, you'll find an undeniably great roguelite ready to be discovered.
Everything Happens for a Reason
While the minimalistic visuals can be downright adorable at times, they're also one of Monster Bullets biggest weaknesses. I'm not asking for great visuals, but there were moments when the lackluster visual design worked against me in every way. Whether it makes it impossible to line up your shots or to distinguish enemies from the background, there's a limit to how "minimalist" you can get before the game turns unplayable.
On the other hand, there's also the game's multiplayer component. While Monster Bullets is fundamentally a single-player experience, its cooperative mode adds another layer of chaotic fun. Teaming up with up to five friends transforms the game from a solo hunting expedition to a frantic team survival mission.
The speed-running timer and endless mode provide additional challenges for those seeking to test their monster-hunting skills against friends and global leaderboards.
With its innovative mechanics, Monster Bullets is an enjoyable shooter held back by its divisive art style.
Pros
- Creative visual design
- Unique strategic bullet system
- Highly replayable with procedural maps
Cons
- The art style might be too basic for some players
- Barebones multiplayer modes
- Not a lot of gameplay depth
