ULTRAKILL is a relentlessly fast-paced first-person shooter that takes the classic formula of those games your parents didn't want you to play, cranks up the violence to 11, and introduces a highly stylized movement and combat system reminiscent of character action games.

In a post-apocalyptic world where machines have outlived humanity, you play as a mystery protagonist sent to the depths of Hell itself to harvest the remaining stores of blood that fuel the robotic denizens of the surface. With its fusion of old-school run-and-gun gameplay and modern mobility options, ULTRAKILL is an intense adrenaline rush that will push your reflexes and skills to their limits.

What immediately stands out is the sheer speed and visceral brutality of the combat. Every encounter is a violent dance where you'll be dashing, sliding, wall-kicking, and juggling enemies in the air with a dizzying array of weapons that each feels immensely powerful and satisfying to wield. ULTRAKILL's armory is packed with flawlessly realized firearms that put many triple-A shooters to shame in terms of pure feel and impact.

Never. Stop. Shooting.

Movement is king in ULTRAKILL, and the sheer speed and mobility at your fingertips are almost overwhelming at first. In addition to standard moves like sprinting and air control, you'll quickly learn techniques like ledge dashing, slide kicks, wall kicks, and more to seamlessly flow across arenas while painting them crimson with robotic carnage.

Mastering these mechanics and chaining them together is immensely rewarding, turning every fight into a hypnotic ballet of bullets and blades. In fact, I'd even say the gameplay loop feels more rewarding than Doom Eternal's over-reliance on weapon typing. It feels like a more realized version of what Bulletstorm tried to achieve, without the Unreal Engine visuals, of course.

Rank and Replayability

While the campaign itself is relatively short but sweet, ULTRAKILL's real meat lies in aiming for higher ranks and replaying levels to discover all their secrets. Each level grades your performance from D to S+ rank based on factors like time, style points earned, and secrets found.

Maxing out rankings introduces brutal challenges like limiting your loadout or giving enemies buffed stats and abilities. This scoring system adds amazing replay value as you push for higher scores. It's not as groovy as Devil May Cry 5's, mind you, but it's nearly there.

A Cacophony of Chaos

The audio/visual design is utterly stunning, with each enemy type having distinct audio cues and visual tells that become essential to process amidst the dazzling pyrotechnics.

The industrial, hellish backdrops are appropriately haunting yet detailed. And the pounding synthwave/metal soundtrack kicks into overdrive once bullets start flying, enveloping you in pure adrenaline.

The low-poly Nintendo 64-esque visuals also give the game an unintentional eeriness that goes well with the fast-paced combat and the hellish themes. There's something innately unnerving about low-poly models that just makes everything else about ULTRAKILL gel together in the most satisfying – and violent – way possible.

ULTRAKILL is an adventurous retro-FPS action game that will send you on a journey through the levels of the most real hell. Mankind died out and left behind a world of soulless machines that run on the blood of living beings. However, the robots, not knowing the measure, have exterminated almost all life on Earth. Determined to let nature recover, the ironmen descend into hell to replenish their blood supply. Take blood baths in Dante's Hell, beautifully demolishing the heads of vile creatures born of sins.
