There is no shortage of NASCAR games, but I would bet that NASCAR Racers is one that flew under many racing games fans radars. This is one of the most unique games based on NASCAR ever made. You see, in the early 2000s in an attempt to get more kids into the sport an animated series was created. This is what this game is based on!
The main game mode that you have on offer in NASCAR Racers is the Adventure Mode. This takes characters and scenarios from the show and weaves a story into all the races that you will be doing. From what I can tell, the characters from the show are represented very well and there is a ton of dialogue setting up each race. Each race in the Adventure Mode gives you a reason to be doing what you are doing so that is pretty cool.
Ok, so I have never actually seen a full episode of the TV show that this is based on, but from a quick look online I can see that they have captured the style of the show pretty well. Everything is nice and bright here and it certainly makes the game stand out from all the other NASCAR games that are out there. Still, it is rather basic and some things can look a tad washed out.
Much To Do
As well as the Adventure Mode, NASCAR Racers also has plenty of other things for you to do. There are single races, a season mode, and more. So, there is a fair bit of content here and a great deal to keep you busy. The Season Mode is what you would expect to find in a standard NASCAR game so it is cool that they put this in here.
Go, Speed Racer!
The actual driving action that is on offer here is rather interesting, to say the least. The game is much more action packed than standard NASCAR games. You have different abilities you can pick up as you race just like in games such as Mario Kart. In the Adventure Mode, you are also tasked with doing stuff in races. For example, you might have to set a lap record as well as win the race in order to progress.
The gameplay has a rather floaty feel to it and the AI does not really put up much of a fight. Which to be fair, kind of makes sense as this is something that was aimed at kids back in the day.
In all, I would say that NASCAR Racers is a pretty interesting game. More so from a historical point of view than a gameplay one. It is unlike any other NASCAR game I have played and while this is most certainly a kid’s game. I do feel that there is a bit of charm here. While I would say it is worth checking out on your computer. I think the real value here is if you are a NASCAR fan as this would be a cool piece to have in your collection.
- Plenty of racers to play as
- Different styles to the tracks
- Follows the story from the show (I think)
- It has a bright style to the presentation
- The power-ups are fun
- At its core, it is a very basic racer
- Controls feel a bit slippery at first
