Metal music taps on just about everything. Its diverse, epic nature channels its tones, themes, and sounds into a variety of media. While it's not the first time there's been a game based on heavy metal - Of Bird and Cage offers quite unique gameplay. It's an opportunity to play through a metal concept album - rather than just listen to it.
Featuring a wealth of renowned metal musicians, an epic soundtrack, and highly ambitious ideas - Of Bird and Cage is not to be missed. But the concern remains - is something like this going to work amongst the mechanics of an adventure game? Well, there's only one way to find out - give it the good old playthrough.
Tell Me Tales of Rock 'n' Roll.
If you've already checked out the teaser for Of Bird and Cage, you'll have already gauged that this game is quite narrative-heavy. For the sake of spoilers, we won't go into the story, considering it's the main intrigue of the playthrough. What we will say, though - it's a brutal fairytale brought to life through some intensely crafted music.
So who knew heavy metal made such a brilliant soundtrack to adventure games? Honestly, there are so many games that use the genre as a backdrop for the action. However, Of Bird and Cage is significantly different. It leverages the idea of a concept album - and drops each theme of the song into some 'choose your own adventure' mechanics. Highly intriguing, but this is where it can get a bit confusing.
The adventure is diverse, the narrative is solid - but there feels like there are missing links. Some of the music doesn't sync brilliantly with what's happening on the screen. Where the game desperately tries to flow - it comes off as a bit jagged in places. Regardless, there is a noble aim to add gameplay elements that keep players intrigued, even if it is a linear storyline.
Choices are made, battles are fought, and tears are shed in this modern tragedy. It's worth saying that the ambition here has really driven this concept to unexpected planes. Still, Of Bird and Cage does feel like it uses some refinement. It's almost like the music was recorded first. And because of that, there's been a forceful application of mechanics. It feels like stuffing a brick into a small circle tin can.
Doesn't Quite Go To Eleven
If you are a metalhead - Of Bird and Cage is a must-play. The environments and events deliver explosive moments where it captivates the idea of you being at a heavy metal theater performance. Albeit the delivery is a little lackluster, the passion for something different sets the foundations for future refined offerings like this.
Putting labels on Of Bird and Cage - it plays like Heavy Rain as told by a heavy metal concept album. That notion alone makes the game worth playing. It's a mark of history this one - and likely to serve as the starting point of what new opportunities metal bands can have with their music. So give, Of Bird and Cage a go - and show some horns.
- An ambitious concept that brings heavy metal music to life
- A fantastic story that provides a lot of diverse gameplay
- Some epic moments where the music and mechanics work in parallel
- Other parts don't work so well together
- Visuals could be improved given the intricacies of the music
- Mechanically disjointed in places
