Retro City Rampage: DX

Retro City Rampage DX is an open-world action game played from a top-down perspective, poking fun at retro games and pop culture. Set in the city of Theftropolis in the mid-1980s, you play as a lowly criminal trying to work his way up the food chain. After discovering a phone booth capable of time travel, you are thrust forward several decades, trapped in the new millennium. To return back to the 80s, you'll have to search the futuristic Theftropolis, completing missions for a variety of gangs as you search for parts that will fix the phone booth. With an ample amount of action, player freedom, and some laugh-out-loud missions, Retro City Rampage DX is a worthwhile upgrade to a stellar retro title.

Main Game Features

  • Open-world map to explore
  • Over 100 missions and challenges
  • Retro pixel art visuals

Story

The year is 1985, and a nameless street thug starts looking to make it big in the life of underground crime. After successfully pulling off cons for a few years, the main character runs afoul of the law in a messy bank robbery, forcing him to take shelter in a seemingly normal phone booth. Unfortunately, this phone booth is actually a time-travel machine, sending the young thug several decades into the future. Upon arrival, the phone booth breaks down, leaving the player stranded. Luckily, you quickly meet up with the quirky Doc Choc, another time-traveler who decides to help you out. Various parts to fix the phone booth are scattered around the futuristic Theftropolis, waiting to be collected. Through a series of wacky missions and encounters, you must recover all the missing parts and make it home.

Gameplay

Retro City Rampage DX is an upgraded version of the original game, Retro City Rampage, containing some much-needed gameplay balancing. Played from a top-down perspective similar to the classic Grand Theft Auto games, players explore the open-world map of Theftropolis, picking up missions from various NPCs. In essence, Retro City Rampage DX is a celebration of 80s and 90s pop culture, featuring tons of references to classic games and films. There are over 60 story missions to enjoy, as well as 40 bonus challenges to complete.

Much like Grand Theft Auto, players are free to hijack cars, beat up civilians, and cause tons of chaos around the city. If you break the law enough, the police will be hot on your tail, requiring you to turn and run or make a last stand. Retro City Rampage DX adds in a handful of other features, including a new “Retro” visual mode, camera zoom settings, better weapon selection menus, and more. One of the best new features is the interactive map, allowing you to set waypoints for missions and places of interest. If you just want to go on a rampage through town, you can also do that via the “Free Roaming Mode” available in-game.

Conclusion

With its silly writing, beautiful pixel art visuals, and a plethora of missions and challenges to complete, Retro City Rampage DX packs a lot of content into its small package. Fans of old-school action games will definitely enjoy this colorful and crazy romp, as will those players with an appreciation for 80s and 90s pop culture. There are occasionally some issues, such as frustrating missions or confusing objectives, but these problems are rare and don't make a huge impact on the overall game.
