I am a fan of these anomaly-spotting games, and with Room 801 mixing that with a fun lewd story, I had a strong feeling that this was going to be a game that I really enjoyed. I ended up playing all the way through the game in just one sitting, and while that may sound like a negative, it actually worked in the game's favor, and I had a very fun time doing so. If you tend to like this kind of thing, I am pretty certain that you will have a good time playing through this game.
The Right Way Out
I have gotten really into the whole anomalies and liminal spaces thing that I feel got popular with The Backrooms and The Exit 8. If you get a kick out of that kind of paranormal type of setting, Room 801 is offering you that, but with a lewd twist. I do feel that Exit 8 is the best comparison to what we have here. However, on the flip side of that, if that sort of thing has never been something that has captured your attention, I am not so sure that this is going to click with you the same way that it did me.
After A Long Day At Work
While there may not be a great deal of story here in Room 801, what is here was more than enough to get my gears spinning and my imagination running wild. We play the role of a young businesswoman (well, I think that is what she is), and after a long day at work, she wants to just get back to her place and relax. However, she finds a strange entity there who gives her a warning and she then finds herself stuck in the same corridor and needing to find the things that should not be there before she makes it to the elevator. It may not give you all the answers, as these types of games tend not to do, but I still love this kind of thing and find it very interesting.
Seeing Is Believing
Room 801 is played from the 2D perspective, and the best way to think of this is kind of like a game of spot the difference. You are tasked with finding the anomalies in each corridor before you can progress. You fail, and you get banged by one of the spirits/entities/whatever the heck you want to refer to them as. To be honest with you, the gameplay does not really change from the first area, but the game is pretty short, coming in at around an hour or so, so you do not have to worry about this overstaying its welcome. Of course, if that first corridor does nothing for you, you may as well turn it off, as apart from having to find more and more difficult to spot anomalies, nothing new is added to the gameplay.
Keeping Your Eye On The Prize!
One thing that I will give Room 801 a lot of credit for is that all of the anomalies are actually realistically able to be spotted. If you miss one, it is one you and you were not paying attention or being thorough enough! The game has a pretty basic kind of art style. But the repetitive nature of the area is something that these liminal space games are known for. There are a handful of lewd scenes in the game where you get banged by one of the creatures, but to be honest with you, while they are animated, they never really did anything for me.
To be honest, I have played better liminal space and anomaly games than this one, but Room 801 was still a pretty solid time. I liked the idea of this young woman just trying to get home and being pulled into this situation, and the spot, the different style gameplay was fun and also pretty challenging in some places too. The lewd content may not have been anything special, but it was done well enough and still kind of fun. If you like this kind of thing, you have nothing to lose by giving this a try, as you can beat the game in one pretty short sitting.
Pros:
- I really liked the premise of the story
- Some of the anomalies were really tricky to spot
- The game controlled well enough
- I liked how it did not ask for too much of my time
Cons:
- I wish her walking speed was a tad quicker
- This is 100 percent a one and done kind of game

Game Reviews
Room 801 is a pixel art horror game in which players must help a young woman escape from a building. She is an office worker - a tall, attractive brunette with a generous bust, dressed in a sharp business suit. Today she stayed late on the 8th floor and was left alone. But after midnight, strange and terrifying things start to happen. Posters come to life, and black figures descend from them; and even if you see the shadow of a black dog on the wall, you’d better run. Sometimes the black spirits will attack in pairs, or even in threes. If they catch you, you’ll be raped- brutally and in various positions.
Game Features
- If you see anything unusual, use a room as a refuge. If everything is quiet, you can use the elevator
- Sound design is crucial, so listen for any ominous noises
- From time to time, you’ll encounter a girl who looks like the ghost from the movie The Ring. But even though she’s holding a bloodied knife, in some endings she might save you.
- The game is very similar to The Eight Floor Mansion and The Way Back Home - Sinister Night
