It has been a few months since SCARLET NEXUS was released and while the game had a little bit of hype behind it and got some solid reviews. It is a game that just seemed to come and go and now it is pretty much forgotten about and it appears to be on sale at most places that sell it. I picked up the PS5 version on release and thought that Bandai-Namco did a hell of a job and think that more people need to pick this up.

Watch Out For The Others

No, I am not talking about the people from the awesome TV show, Lost. The story of SCARLET NEXUS has you fighting against these crazy mutants called The Others which come from this place that is called, The Extinction Belt. It is a great sci-fi story and one that I found myself getting really invested in.

The two playable characters are members of an organization called, the Other Suppression Force. The world this game is set in is in the future where mankind has mastered control of the mind and as a result, OSF soldiers can use telekinesis abilities. I thought it was pretty good stuff and like a sci-fi anime and I mean that in a very complimentary way.

Code Red

The visuals of SCARLET NEXUS are outstanding, I am talking about the PlayStation 5 version of the game here, but from what I have seen, the game looks fantastic on all platforms. What I mean about code red is that the game has a kind of red hue to it all. It is hard to explain, but the game certainly has a very stylish kind of look to it and I really do think it is great stuff. The character models have a very anime vibe about them and I am not surprised that there is an anime adaptation to go along with this.

Saying What You Feel

As well as being a good-looking game, SCARLET NEXUS also sounds great. It has a very fitting soundtrack and it has excellent use of ambient sounds as well. The voice acting is fantastic and helps you get more connected to the characters. In all, they did a wonderful job with the sound design in this game.

Slicing Your Way Forward

The best thing about this game for me is the combat. SCARLET NEXUS has some of the best combat I have experienced in a game this year. It at first seems like it is all hacking and slashing when it comes to the combat and a great deal of it is. However, you can use ranged attacks, but the big draw is your telekinesis powers and how you can grab things and throw them at enemies. What is extra cool about this is that you can do this while doing regular attacks so it all gels together very well.

You have a nice sense of progression in the game. The story missions are a ton of fun and having two playable characters gives it a lot of replay value. It has a skill tree system for upgrading which I like. The only thing that drags the game down a tad is the tacked-on side missions. These are in all honesty quite boring and rather uninspired. I think they might have been better having fewer of them, but making them more interesting.

I had a great time with SCARLET NEXUS, but it has gotten kind of lost in the shuffle. Even when talking about my favorite games of 2021, I tend to forget about it and I loved it! This is a real shame as no matter if you are playing on a PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Xbox One, or PC, I highly recommend that you check this out as it is a great deal of fun.

  • I loved the story the game told
  • You have two characters to play as
  • The combat is incredibly satisfying
  • This is going to end up being a real hidden gem of a game

  • The side missions are not very interesting
  • Not enough people have played this game so I doubt we will get a sequel
