Sonic 3D Blast (or simply Sonic 3D in certain countries) is an isometric platform game, starring Sonic the Hedgehog along with other familiar characters from the series.

The storyline is nothing special; on an island in an alternate dimension there are peculiar birds called Flickies, with the special abilities. Because of this, they are subject to Doctor Robotnik’s exploitations as he searches for the lost Chaos Emeralds. It is Sonic’s job to save them and prevent the evil doctor from fulfilling his plan.

The title is somewhat misleading. The 3D models are pre-rendered as sprites in a two dimensional environment, resulting in what is called 2.5D. Still, they are rendered nicely and, at the time of its release, offered something new in regards to graphics. The effects scattered around the game really make it pleasant to play. The music is nice and varied, with quite a few tracks; few and repetitive songs can ruin a game and luckily, it is not the case here.

In Sonic 3D, the gameplay changes from previous titles. Now that you can move in any direction, Sonic moves a little slower, and that is a nice touch. The goal is to defeat robot Flickies, thus returning to normal, and warping them to safety through magic rings. Until you send them off, they follow you around and, if Sonic is hit, they will scatter along with any rings you have collected. There are different types of Flickies; some try to return to Sonic while others wander in any possible direction. Finding Knuckles or Tails and providing them with at least 50 rings will allow you to visit a bonus stage where you can earn a Chaos Emerald. In the end you must battle Doctor Robotnik to make sure he never returns to the Flickies’ island.

Although there were complaints about the controls, it was probably due to its being new and very much different from its side-scrolling counterparts. It is a worthy title in this long-running series and any self-respecting Sonic fan should at least give this game a try.

Sonic 3D Blast features:

  • Beautifully rendered 3D sprites in a decorated 2D environment.
  • Diverse and plentiful soundtrack.
  • Innovative gameplay compared to other Sonic titles.

Game Reviews

Sega's most celebrated character returns to breathe some life into the fading Genesis market. Cleverly designed levels and good 3D-rendered graphics make Sonic 3D Blast the best Genesis game in ages.

As everybody's favorite hedgehog, you jump, spin dash, and now blast your way through seven huge levels to rescue Flickies from their robotic prisons. Distributed throughout the mazelike levels, Flickies are the keys to completing each act. But beware of Dr. Robotnik and the many traps and obstacles you encounter.

Unfortunately, trying to find a way out of each level can be frustrating early on. Because you play with an angled-over- head view, timing jumps, spin dashes, and Blast Attacks to destroy enemies or to catch moving platforms requires practice. However, once you have the moves down, the game is easy to beat, which reduces its replay value.

Graphically superior to its predecessors, Sonic 3D Blast is a winner guaranteed to consume even the most experienced gamers...if only for a few days.

ProTip: Deposit Flickies in the Big Ring as soon as you find them.

Graphics

The game graphics are 4 s excellent. The large sprites and clean, crisp movements never glitch, even during the most intense action.

Fun Factor

The game has only a 4 5 decent replay value, but it does have some great graphics and big levels to run around in. Sonic fans will love it.

Sound

The effects are recycled from previous games. But the musical selection is eclectic, ranging from techno-pop to contemporary jazz.

Control

The controls are generally good once you learn to pinpoint your jumps. The new Blast Attack that enables Sonic to home in on enemies is awesome.

ProTips:

  • In Spring Gadget Zone, instead of using balloons to bypass deadly spikes, just continue jumping. Those spikes won't be able to nail you.
  • In any bonus round, stay on the ground as much as possible. If you jump, you might miss out on a bunch of rings.
  • Once you're finished with a bonus round, all rings regenerate throughout the rest of the level. Backtrack and load up on rings so you can easily pile up 1-ups, continues, and Chaos Emeralds.
  • Once Sonic gets the Gold Shield, don't pick up other shields. Only the Gold Shield gives Sonic the ability to do his new killer Blast Attack.
  • In any boss level, take the rings as you need them. If Dr. Robotnik hits you, the rings disperse and disappear fast
  • Look for cracks in walls and spin dash through them to get to secret areas with more rings, special items, and bonus rounds.

Sonic blasts his way back onto the Genesis with an all-new look that's awesome. You'll play via a 3/4-overhead (isometric) view that enables you to motor through the game's 7 Zones and 14 Acts in 360 degrees. Dr. Robotnik's back to terrorize creatures called Flickies. The Gamers' Day demo made it clear that despite the overhead view Sonic's faster than ever as he races to snatch Rings and undo Robotnik's evil deeds.

Sonic the Hedgehog is back! Sega's going to plant its blue hero in five platforms, but it hasn't forgotten where he made his rep. Sonic Genesis busts out of 2D gameplay into sizzling 3D action. This time Sonic rescues his animal pals from Dr. Robotnik's clutches in a 360-degree world through seven Zones, with bonus levels and hidden areas. The E3 version wasn't up to full speed, but Sega promises massive 'hog acceleration.
