The Naked Game by SiCzech Arts is a first person physiological thriller and puzzle exploration game. That follows a kidnapped woman as she figures out a way to escape this dark and frightening complex.
Story and Theme
Inspired by real events, the story follows Mia, a young Eurasian girl who is kidnapped during a trip from her home country of Japan to France. Mia awakens in an unknown location and is forced to seek out her memories in this peculiarly familiar place; Mia has to solve the riddles that her kidnapper prepared if she is to escape. Through its story the game addresses complex issues such as psychological trauma, fear and anxiety.
The game takes inspiration from real historical events such as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster in 2011 caused by the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and even the German expeditions to the Far East. These subjects range from natural disasters to the occult, giving the game a lot of its atmosphere.
The gameplay within this title is that of first person puzzle solving. The puzzles can be quite hardcore, to the point of daunting but with a little perseverance they can be handled in time. There is a great deal of stumbling around as you combat the oppressive darkness with a flashlight and solve your trials. A little advice is to double and triple check everything as if you miss something it can make solving a puzzle impossible, however if you approach everything with as clear and informed a mind as possible you’ll find that everything adheres to a logical and reasonable solution. The conundrums held within this title are not arbitrary and do not illicit a frustration formed from an aspect that you cannot control.
I found the gameplay to be somewhat reminiscent of the popular horror game Outlast by Red Barrels. No combat, only your wits in a frightening environment. Pleasantly, this game has far more puzzles which are something I greatly enjoy.
Okay, I’m going to give it to you straight. This game is freaky and I love it. The use of light and dark creates a panicky feeling that doesn’t dissolve just because you have a flashlight. There could be anything, any monster or horrible revelation hiding just out of sight. The sound design makes you feel anxious at all times, even the lack of sound is an important aspect in this game as it can make you ache with suspense. Interestingly, even the fact you’re naked through it all lent a great amount to feeling vulnerable, anxious, and most of all, exposed. It’s clever. Especially with its use of visual filters that make things hard to define and cause you to question what you’re actually seeing.
The game has a very buggy start but once you get through that, the frightening ambience and suspenseful pacing give this game a brilliantly spooky feeling. If you got the time, give this game a go.
