Nothing beats a story focused video game adventure. Seriously, today, most video game titles are saddled with one too many ideas, causing the experience to be lacking in basically all departments. With that sort of trend riddling the entire gaming space, it’s always nice to see a game that knows what it wants to be. As Dusk Falls is a title that embraces its storytelling focus in a beautiful way, and that makes it all the more worthy as an experience.
As Dusk Falls Explained
As Dusk Falls is part of the next generation of narrative games. Interior/Night's first project, an interactive drama, is intended to sit at the intersection of premium television and story-driven computer games. It's a story about human individuals navigating the ups and downs of ordinary life, as well as the difficulties experienced by those who become lost in the vastness of the American Southwest.
As Dusk Falls, which spans three decades, will force us to consider the implications of our choices on those we leave behind. The game is one that is similar in presentation to something like Telltale’s The Walking Dead or even The Wolf Among Us.
Story
That plot revolves around a family who relocates from California to Missouri in an attempt to start over after a history of job loss, marital difficulty, and a plethora of other relevant human problems that match very human characters. The game begins in 1999, when a family of three stops in a hotel in the midst of a desert when their car breaks down, only to be confronted with another family and a tragedy as a result of a botched heist.
As Dusk Falls is a 30-year-old tale. The small child in the original trailer, for example, will eventually become a prominent character in the story, where you'll learn how the effects of previous acts shaped her character and worldview.
Gameplay Overview
While Interior/Night isn't quite ready to discuss how As Dusk Falls will play, Marchal, the game director is keen to emphasize that the studio has been intent on delivering a game that can be enjoyed by anyone with even a passing interest in interactive storytelling, regardless of whether they are fluent in video game language. "Our ultimate objective is to be really wide and approachable. It's not so much about your talent or speed with your thumbs as it is about how well you comprehend the context of the story - that you understand what's going on, how the characters feel, and how you feel about them."
Verdict
Where As Dusk Falls finally differs from other forms of entertainment is in the manner that the decisions made reflect a portion of our own awareness and prejudice back on us. That is the actual power of story games, and it is something Interior/Night is focusing on.
As Dusk Falls is sure to be a thought provoking video game experience for anyone that is yet to have played a title like it. Still, there’s a lot of details that will be brought to light as we inch closer to release. Still, I think it’s one that deserves a spot on your radar!
