Astro Boy: Omega Factor is a sidescrolling action game based on the popular cartoon and anime. Starring the robotic, super-powered Astro Boy, this exciting title offers a huge amount of action in a handheld experience. While the game is mostly based around the 2003 cartoon, Astro Boy: Omega Factor includes plot elements from the entire Astro Boy canon, including a huge roster of characters. Using Astro Boy's signature powers, you'll punch, kick, and blast your way through countless levels with a great amount of variety. Fans of retro action games take notice, as Astro Boy: Omega Factor is an underrated gem you won't want to miss.

Main Game Features

  • Retro sidescrolling action
  • Three difficulty levels
  • Hidden secrets and upgrades

Story

The story in Astro Boy: Omega Factor starts out pretty simple. After awakening, Astro Boy meets Dr. Bryan O'Shay, a helpful professor who teaches him the ropes. When his assistant Wato is kidnapped, Astro Boy rushes into action. Due to Astro Boy's interesting construction, he gains power every time he meets a new person, encouraging him to travel around and solve various problems. This adventure takes him to a variety of cool locales, including a robotic city, a legendary lost continent, and even through time itself. Unfortunately, the overarching story gets super confusing at times, with random characters popping up constantly, but never getting fleshed out. Unless you're already a big fan of the Astro Boy franchise, a lot of this story might be too vague to understand.

Gameplay

Luckily, the gameplay in Astro Boy: Omega Factor more than makes up for its shortcomings in the story department. Like other classic sidescrolling action games, the main objective is to move toward the right side of the screen, defeating enemies and avoiding pitfalls. Astro Boy has a handful of super useful abilities, including rocket-boots, a laser beam attack, spread-shot fire, and more. These special moves can only be used if you have enough energy, so you'll have to resort to standard punches and kicks occasionally. As you progress through the game, you'll meet new characters, allowing you to level up Astro Boy's various skills. These skills include health, attack damage, special move power, extra boost jumps, and more.

While the story can be dull at times, the gameplay never gets repetitive, thanks to the consistent variety. Levels never feel too long, so you'll rarely grow bored of the environments. Some levels play out like classic horizontal shoot 'em up games, shaking up the pacing. There are some massive and awesome bosses to fight at the end of most levels, punctuating each stage with a climactic showdown. As you grow in power and unlock more moves, these fights get more and more chaotic, making you feel like an unstoppable hero.

Conclusion

Astro Boy: Omega Factor does a great job keeping the player engaged, thanks to a multitude of fun game concepts, a cool upgrade system, and plain old fun gameplay.
