I have been keeping an eye on BOC for a while and I think as the game is about to enter early access now is the right time to talk about it. What we have here with this game is a turn-based strategy game that has a level of realism that is very uncommon. Seriously, if you think you are a huge fan of games like this, you have seen nothing yet. What the developer has planned for this is just staggering and today I wanted to take a look at a few of the main features they have talked about so far.
From The Ice Age To The Golden Age
As is the case in most games like this, BOC has you needing to guide your civilization through history. It starts out at the end of the ice age where you have a rather modest tribe to care for.
Ultimately the game is going to take you through history all the way up to the fall of the Roman Empire! It sounds like epic stuff and their aim for realism is going to make things very interesting as you progress through the game.
It Really Is A Huge World!
The size of this game is massive, it is going to be the largest game of its kind ever made. BOC is going to allow you to battle on small maps, but it will also feature maps that are over three times the size of the current maps that are out there in other games. With their desire to be as realistic as possible, exploration is going to be handled a bit differently. The terrain is going to play a major part in things and so can the actual curve of the world! It sounds pretty insane and it sure is going to be something that takes a lot of dedication from the player to get the best out of it.
Progress The Way You Want To Progress
The way that BOC handles progression sounds very freeing. They have stated that the player is free to expand and move forward with their civilization in any way that they see fit. You have a ton of different cultures, views, and so on to choose from as you move through time. Usually, you pick a certain faction, religion, ideology, or something to follow and everything else will fit into that. With this game, you have a much more sandbox approach to things as you are free to play the way that you want to play.
Battles Have No Limit!
One of the things that caught my attention was this “Our technology provides a large capacity of game entities for battles, officially there is no limit”! that sounded very interesting to me.
They say that they want you to feel like you are actually in charge of an army instead of just moving little pieces around the screen. If they succeed in this remains to be seen, but I do like the ambition that they have here. With the size of the game, I think the battles could wind up being very epic.
I think that a game like BOC is tailored for a very specific kind of gamer. The kind of gamer that loves stuff like Age of Empires and Tropico, but wants even more from them. This is a game that I have a feeling is going to be very difficult and the kind of game that is going to demand a great deal from the player. The thing is, those that like this kind of thing I am sure are going to find this very addictive and engaging!
Pros:
- This is arguably the largest game of its kind
- I like the idea of starting out at the end of the ice age
- The battles sound like they are going to be bigger than anything we have seen before
- They are going for an unprecedented level of realism
Cons:
- This game is going to be really hard to get into, I am sure!
- So far, no concrete date for early access to actually start
