I have to be honest with you and say that when I first started playing Butterfly Affection I was really grossed out, I thought that this game was nightmare fuel! However, I stuck with it, and the game and the girl, monster, thing, or whatever you want to refer to her as grew on me and I realized why so many people get heavily invested in this visual novel.
Ageha!
The plot of the game is very interesting. One day you find this strange creature near your home and you decide to take it home and care for it. While at first you are scared and have no idea what the heck it is. As the name, Butterfly Affection implies, you really start to warm to her and before long you decide that Ageha could be something special.
This is quite a short story and it does have two different outcomes. It is very well written and they do a great job of making you warm up to her, after being repulsed and they do it so well that you may actually feel bad for being grossed out by her at the start of the story.
Beautifully Tragic
Look, at the start of the Butterfly Affection, when you first find Ageha she is gross, like really gross. The clever thing is, this was all done by design. The art makes you not want to look at her, but as the game progresses, she changes and becomes more and more human. The whole game is drawn incredibly well and by the end of it, I felt like I was watching a movie (a still movie I might add) as the art along with the writing had gotten me so invested in what was going on. The music is quite sparse, but I do feel that works in the games favor. There is no voice acting and this is one of the few times I feel that it is a plus as she is the kind of character that it is better to have your own idea of what she would sound like.
Day To Day
Butterfly Affection is a very short game, you can easily play through the whole story in around two hours or so. The thing is, the length is perfect as the game makes a real impact on you and it is a story that you soon will not forget. It also makes it a great game to play if you want something you can beat in one sitting.
The “gameplay” has you needing to live day to day with Ageha and you have to decide what activities and so on you want to do with her on each day. If you ask me, just do them all as ignoring some can lead you to get a game over so it is best just to do everything you can with her on each day.
These activities and the journal that you are writing do make you get more attached to her as you play.
I went into Butterfly Affection pretty sure that I was going to hate it and that was all because of how Ageha looked at the start of the game. I say bravo to the person behind this as the game makes you really connect to her and actually care about her. It is short, but that is something I see as a good thing. Be sure to give this one a try if you like visual novels.
