If this Olympic year has given you a mega-dose of competitive spirit, then put your track shoes on and bring a few weapons. In American Technos' Crash 'n' the Boys: Street Challenge, you compete against the tough kids on the Southside, and they don't play fair.

Be True to Your School

For years, the Southsiders have soundly beaten three snobbish high schools at all sporting events. Finally, the "hillers" got tired of losing and challenged them to a contest with no refs, no restrictions, and no rules.

In this one-or two-player game, you can choose your team from one of four, and then choose the individual sportster you want to compete. As manager, make sure the guy you choose is built for the job. You control the athlete and must compete in either a short meet of three events or a full-scale, five-event competition. In the short meet, choose between the 400-M Hurtles, Hammer Throw Golf, Skyline Scramble, Judo, and Water Slaughter. In the long meet, you have to suffer (literally) through all five painstaking rounds.

ProTips:

  • You don't have to finish the race to win. If your opponent is low on energy, concentrate on kicking him and throwing hurdles at him. Eventually, he'll go down.
  • It's definitely worth the money to purchase some extra "rebounds" at the mall to insure the Gold in Skyline Scramble.

Cash 'n' the Boys

If you are low on strength, you may have to trade in your medals to revive yourself. Before each event, our quincatholoners hit the shops to stock up on health, handy competitive items, items for the upcoming event, or info on the opposing team.

The Finish Line

Though playing against the computer is fairly challenging (without rapid fire), competing against a friend adds some "intense" rivalry to the game. Though the graphics are not spectacular, this game is fun. However, if you want to stay in the race, it's best to turn off the distracting music.

You may not be officially sponsored in these games, but you will gain some streets smarts. Step up to the challenge in Street Challenge.

Thrash some major trash!

Welcome the city of Spring Hill. At a first glance, everything seems peaceful. Stay awhile and you'll see that the so-called undesirable people live on the south side. These brave, hard-working people live each day under constant humiliation. Their only sense of pride comes from the Southside High School.

This school's team has won every single sporting event for years. The champion athlete "Crash" Cooney always leads them to victory, much to the dismay of the wealthier Northside High. The Hillers (as the Northsiders are called) seek to stop Southside from winning at all costs! The leader of the Hiller gang is Theodore Thornley IV, a rich snob. He is sick and tired of losing, so he has his father build the ultimate team. Then, he challenged Crash Cooney and his gang to a no-holds-barred contest. Will Crash be able to retain the Southside's pride through five hard-hitting events?

The system everybody is talking about is almost ready to be unleashed on the public! The 3DO system with graphics superior to any home system, including the NEO-GEO system, will be available shortly, and here is a peek at what's in store: Crash 'N Burn - a combat racing game that blows away any 16-Meg cart available out there! The story: its the year 2044, after the last global conflict, World War III. For sport there is a no-holds-barred race where the gamer can select from nine drivers (each is portrayed by an actor or actress with live digitized footage, giving him or her a personality) and the chance to race on 30 different tracks! These aren't your ordinary racing tracks though: there are corkscrews, dizzying inclines and nauseatingly steep declines, jumps, and more than your share of hazards like tar, water puddles, sand, ice, plus even mines, just to name a few! There are also atmospheric effects including earthquakes, sunsets, moving clouds, and steam. However, you aren't alone: you have your weapons to keep you company, and with friends like Vortex Mines, a 120mm Gauss Cannon, and Fusion Canisters you will keep your enemies' hands more than full! There are three different modes to choose from: Demolition (destroy your opponent in combat - a mode that is two-player simultaneous), Tournament (compete for the World Championship of the Deathdrome title) and Rally (the best of up to five races). All these different modes in a game that is 100 percent texture mapped! Stay tuned to us for more on upcoming 3DO titles!

SELECT YOUR GAME AND OPTIONS

PICK YOUR GAME

You can pick one of any three modes (although only two are pictured here): Demolition, Rally, and Tournament! Before each race on a new track, statistics will be shown, as well as the track's current champion. The Demolition mode (not shown) is a two-player simultaneous game!

TRACK I: UP THE DIZZYING INCLINE

This first track will take you up an incline that you will see forming as you move down the track! Watch for oncoming hazards like land mines from other drivers, and also atmospheric hazards like sand and ice on the track! After each lap, there is a pit stop where you refuel and get more armor! In the behind-the-car mode, keep an eye on your rearview mirror in the upper left-hand corner: it'll show competitors and their position in relation to you!

TRACK 2: THE VERTICAL CORKSCREW

If you thought the first track had a steep incline, wait until you see this vertical corkscrew! Be careful in the tunnel - don't scrape the sides! When you emerge from the tunnel, the vertical corkscrew is straight ahead waiting for you to race to the top! Of course the other drivers will be firing at you, so don't be distracted by the awesome scenery! When behind the wheel, your weapons will be displayed in the center console; when viewing behind the car, they will be at the top middle of the screen.

"Crash" Cooney and his posse from Southside High own every sports record in Spring Hill history. Legends? Heroes? Not in this town - where Todd Thornley and all the rich snobs up on the Hill think Southsiders are low-lifes.

So Todd and the silver-spoon mama's boys at the three "Hiller" schools have issued a desperate challenge to save their fading reps: Let's take it to the streets in the Southside...no rules...no refs...no penalties - and we'll see who comes out in one piece.

And just in case the Hillers can't handle Crash'N'The Boys, Todd's rich daddy has fielded Team Thornley - a ringer group of super-athletes from Thornley Industries.

Five radical events. Five motivated teams. Five members per team. Only one winner.

Crash is back with his buds to take on the rival gangs again. This time around, the boys have decided to settle their differences by playing hockey. Like all the gang activities, this one is steeped with violence. Eight gangs will go at it head-to-head to prove who is the best. Five different rinks, along with special moves set this cart above most NES hockey games. Each team has their own personality, and with the radical two-player mode, you can challenge your friends. If you go in alone, the computer gets really tough. One of the best NES hockey games ever!
