Once considered one of Wii’s top games, Donkey Kong Returns 3D has thrived ever since dropping on the Nintendo 3DS system, and while not everything in this version is considered perfect, the game itself is overall wonderfully done and will have you playing for hours on end. While the games graphics and frame rate are anything but perfect on the 3DS, new features such as an entirely new world with eight new levels have players dying to get a copy of this sought-after game.
Donkey Kong and Diddy, his faithful sidekick, must run, climb, barrel roll and more throughout the world where the banana supply has been stolen! As with older Donkey Kong games where difficulty levels were seemingly unattainably high, this game will test you but it is clear that overall, developers want you to have fun and enjoy playing through this unique world.
Storyline & Gameplay
Withing the theatrical world of Donkey Kong players find themselves at a loss… of bananas. While having Donkey and Diddy’s banana supply stolen as well as their animal friends being hypnotized the journey begins. While climbing, running, jumping and rolling through each level you must collect bananas on your way up while keeping an eye out for the collectables scattered throughout. While the game itself has always been simplistic in terms of structure, the same old high-difficulty keeps players engaged throughout the game.
There is also a new feature for those struggling to progress through the game, where the optional New Mode assists players in reaching the next level. If that isn’t enough there’s also a function where once you run out of lives the game can auto play you through to the next level.
Features & Differences
While the game remains very similar to its Wii version, there are some differences which both add to the experience as well as hinder it. Through the 3DS version we see a much slower frame rate, where on the Wii the game looks wonderful, it definitely takes a hit on the 3DS. Where in a game such as this, graphics and animations can make or break the experience, the slower frame rate doesn’t altogether ruin the game for new players, luckily.
However the 3DS version does have it’s pros, such as adding a new world with eight fresh levels for both long time fans and newbies alike to enjoy. Think Super Mario Bros. in terms of similar style games, where Donkey Kong takes its own creative liberties that fans have reveled in for years.
If only this game could have kept its animations and graphics on par with the Wii version then this might have been much closer to a perfect score. The game itself is an entirely new experience with added levels and worlds, yet it can’t quite compete due to the lack of frame rate speed and detailed graphics.
- Eight new levels add to the overall experience of the game, enticing new players and seasoned vets alike.
- Poor frame rate on the Nintendo 3DS version in relation to the Wii version results in a lackluster graphic experience.
