Some indie game developers manage to get a hit game and gather a lot of success and fame. That is the case of Crate Entertainment, a game developer known for creating a certain ARPG games in the past. However, now they went for a completely different game genre, and it is the most interesting one we must say. Crate Entertainment is back with a new video game with which they hope to captivate once again all their followers. However, this time it is not an RPG but a medieval style City Building strategy title called Farthest Frontier.
The choice of genre is undoubtedly striking, as its popularity has declined over the years. However, it seems that during 2021 it experienced a resurrection as several titles are scheduled for release throughout the year. So, what is Farthest Frontier all about? Well, let’s talk about it!
About the game
Unlike other construction games, in this case, the goal is not to reach a modern era with skyscrapers from a centuries-old urbanization. They promise the most advanced farm system, 50 different types of buildings with upgrades, and other usual features of the genre. The population will live in real-time, so we will be able to follow their movements around the city to get the materials needed for their work.
Of course, this world is not free of threats including diseases and pandemics typical of the time. In case of deactivating the pacifist mode, there is also the risk of suffering invasions from nearby colonies. In principle, Farthest Frontier does not bring anything revolutionary to the genre, but neither did Grim Dawn, the previous most popular game from these developers, and it became a very notable game.
On the other hand, keeping our medieval villagers happy and content will not be the only challenge we will have to face. Defending the city from enemy forces will be fundamental, but we will also have to fight other less tangible threats such as plagues and diseases. In fact, Crate Entertainment points out that they have paid special attention to the latter to punish players with ailments such as cholera, dysentery, or scurvy.
The developers speak of great replayability thanks to its procedural generation for terrain and resource distribution: no two games will be the same. There are some options to control, including the amount of water or nearby mountains, while the more challenging maps offer great challenges.
Not much new, but still unique?
Farthest Frontier has really nothing in common with the previous game developed by Crate Entertainment, but it does have the same attention to detail and spirit in the development team. As we mentioned before, there really aren't many innovations to the genre, but still, they managed to polish the genre incredibly. As usual in this type of title, we will have to manage the growth of our population by securing a series of resources.
In Farthest Frontier, agriculture will play a fundamental role as it will be the main source of food for our villagers. To do this, Crate Entertainment has developed a complex system of farms in which we will have to take into account techniques such as crop rotation. And more things like this are what they did to make this game unique.
Review: 8.5/10
Farthest Frontier is an incredibly solid game, they created a game with little news to a genre that's not been that popular in years, and still managed to create a great game. Even though we have not mentioned this, the visuals in the game are incredibly good and have a good art style too.
We recommend Farthest Frontier a lot if you want something similar to Cities: Skylines, but with more variety and depth.
Pros:
- A game with beautiful graphics
- Great gameplay
- Well-Polished mechanics
Cons:
- You can’t change the difficulty
- Limited number of buildings

Game Reviews
Farthest Frontier is a city manager and colony leader simulation where the player will strategically manage a large settlement. Many boys dream of controlling a city: Farthest Frontier gives you the opportunity to take charge of tens of thousands of settlers in order to lead people to a well-fed and spiritual future. Crowds of barefoot people build their own perfect city, where there will be a utopia. The colonists are waiting for a miracle, waiting for a well-fed life, waiting for prosperity. Everyone wants to have a family and enjoy life. The world is so arranged that difficulties always accompany people, so help people get settled in paradise.
Questions of Power
On the player's shoulders lies the weight of questions:
- Where do people live
- How to defend against enemy attacks
- How to resist bubonic plague, cholera and dysentery
- How to build factories and factories for clothing
- How to till the land and harvest the crops
- Where to build streets
- How to quarry stone, wood, and clay
- How to employ the entire population
Gameplay
Each gameplay experience will be unique, because the map is randomly generated and there is no pre-designed scenario. The development of the city is not predictable. Problems arise, the player solves them, the appearance of the city is transformed.
The player will see the entire city from above, you can zoom in and out of the map perspective. During the gameplay, you can see the townspeople walking around the square, riding on carts, carrying wood on carts. Blacksmiths forge armor and swords. Cooks make porridge in huge vats under the canopy.
The player gathers resources and replenishes the treasury to make life safer and more comfortable. He builds roads and sewers, and builds fortifications. Farming is an important part of the game. You can plant entire fields with sugar beets, flax, and tobacco. The main thing is to clothe and shoe the poor so they don't rebel and go on the defensive if the enemy attacks.
Farthest Frontier is a turn-based strategy that will help you become a wise manager and show the townspeople that they did not put power in the player's hands for nothing. Colorful graphics and user-friendly interface make for a quality game. We recommend it to fans of Anno 1800, Manor Lords and Settlement Survival.
