An adaptation of the newest spinoff show of the popular racing franchise, Fast & Furious: Spy Racers - Rise of SHIFT3R is an entertaining arcade racer. Featuring tons of fast cars and solid driving controls, this fun racing game is perfect for fans of the franchise and racing games in general.

Despite its apparent simplicity, Rise of SHIFT3R is more than serviceable enough as a single or multiplayer gaming experience. In a sense, it feels like a game out of its time: a reminder of the golden days of arcade racing games where fun was the only thing that mattered.

Mastering the Road

Much like the Asphalt series of mobile games, Rise of SHIFT3R focuses more on the flashy moments of racing rather than a realistic simulation of driving a real car. As such, you’ll spend more time drifting, jumping, and tackling opponents rather than just focusing on the road ahead of you.

This explosive racing is paramount to The Fast and The Furious series, so it’s great to see that this game captures that excitement with such detail. Even more impressive is how varied the tracks of Rise of SHIT3R can be.

The game follows the plotline of the Netflix show Fast & Furious: Spy Racers, where a group of skilled racers travel around the world, foiling the plans of the nefarious criminal organization, SHIFT3R.

Each race is as much a battle as it is a competition, with players having to trigger traps and evading obstacles as they beat the rest of SHIFT3R’s goonies. This results in a tense racing experience that isn’t just pretty to look at, it’s also exhilaratingly fun to play.

Gadgets and Races

The cars you’ll get to drive in Rise of SHIFT3R aren’t just simple top-of-the-line racing cars; these are fully-equipped spying devices that would make James Bond eat his heart out.

As a spy, you’ll get to visit some of the world’s most fantastical locales. In the game, you’ll get to race in all sorts of exotic places, which include the South Pacific, the Sahara Desert, and even some more tropical locations.

Each race track has a unique feel to them, something that makes the experience of racing around in Rise of SHIFT3R feel even bigger than it is. Of course, this wouldn’t be a proper arcade racer, let alone a Fast & Furious game, without some extensive vehicle customization.

While most of the cars you’ll get to drive come straight out of the Netflix show, that doesn’t mean that you can’t customize those vehicles to better suit your every racing need.

From skins to custom spy loadouts, the customization in Rise of SHIFT3R will let you adapt your car to every mission.

It’s also worth mentioning that the game can be played in local co-op mode. In a time when online multiplayer seems to be the only way to go when it comes to multiplayer games, it’s amazing to see a title that’s capable of reigniting our love for a good session of couch co-op, just like in the good old days of early Need for Speed Underground.
