You've probably seen that there is a simulator for just about every obscure concept these days. Gaming history will look back and wonder, 'where did all this nonsense begin?'. That answer is found right here in Goat Simulator - the godfather of all 21st-century wacky sim games. The source of all indie development madness up until this very day.
Goat Simulator began as a joke - but the response was so exciting that it tempted developers into a complete release. We've seen plenty of games released for cheap laughs and 5 minutes of fun. Goat Simulator looks to crush its competition by bringing a decently designed game, along with an entire barrel of laughs for hours on end. It's got a cult following now, but is it actually any good?
He's Just A Skater Goat
Goat Simulator is one of the buggiest, silliest, most sporadic games ever released to the market. If we didn't know that it was meant to be this way - we would tear it apart in an instant. The whole theme of the game revolves around poor development standards - which in turn makes it hilarious.
As the name dictates, you will control a goat to unleash mayhem around a town sporadically set with interactive assets. There are no set objectives or narratives. Your mission - should you choose to accept it - is to traverse the community and destroy as much as possible. You'll get points for completing random tasks like making noise, breaking a fence, or even disrupting a family dinner.
The visuals are cheap and look like downloaded assets from someone's first 3D project. The animations are poor - with barely any movement on any of the characters or goats. We know it's meant to be terrible, though. It's rare when such minimalistic development standards actually work in the game's favor - but somehow, it does in Goat Simulator.
Hours of entertainment are had just exploring and seeing what wacky things you can do with the goat. Particular highlights are skydiving, climbing a ladder, and the overzealous explosions in hitting things. Even serious gamers can't criticize the dreadfully broken mechanics - it's a painfully perfect homage to buggy open-world games.
The "G.O.A.T"
Never will you find a game that can be so unpolished, yet it is embraced by fans. Goat Simulator is an ongoing joke that is so much fun to play, despite it being nearly unplayable in places. That's all we can really ask from a game, though - be entertaining. The minimalist approach makes sure that any goat-ridden experiences are not hindered by bugs and glitches.
Yes, you will simulate a goat - though it plays more like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater in the sense of random tricks for points. Goat Simulator started this whole trend of ridiculous simulator games. We have this to blame for any more ludicrous productions on concepts that really are a bit too avant-garde. But we can never forget the goaty goodness of the original.
Pros:
- The game makes art out of poor development
- The minimalist approach and unpredictable physics bring hours of fun
- The jet pack is so ridiculous you may hurt yourself laughing
Cons:
- No objectives mean there's not much replayability value
- You will need to reset the game to escape some bugs
