When Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball was released in 2004 for the original Xbox console, it brought the fun and adrenaline of competitive paintball tournaments into living rooms. Featuring authentic pro players, real-life fields, and game modes that mimic actual tournaments, the game captured the essence of the sport for armchair athletes.

Authenticity Through and Through

What sets Greg Hastings' apart from other FPS titles of the time is its dedication to realism. Players can choose from 14 licensed pro paintballers, compete on 25 officially licensed fields, and face off against 69 real-world teams. Hand switching lets you carry your marker left or right-handed, and a "cheat meter" tracks attempts to wipe the paint off without getting called - creating more authentic gameplay.

While the graphics are basic by today's standards, they accurately recreated tournament elements that paintball fans could easily recognize. Official sponsors, referees in striped shirts, and specialized fields transport players to real competitions.

Competitive Modes for Solo and Team Play

Both single-player and multiplayer modes offer opportunities for competition. Career mode consists of 19 tournaments against AI teams that get progressively harder as you rank up from rookie to pro. You earn experience to improve your skills and unlock new guns.

Up to 7 players can compete online via Xbox Live or system link, communicating on the "field" using Xbox Live voice chat. 20 distinct locations feature 179 multiplayer layouts for fast-paced team-based competition.

We also have to mention that the online integration this game had was really good, it managed to make online work pretty much seamlessly, and that’s saying a lot back then. Especially being a console-only game.

The multiplayer and online modes were incredibly well-developed, but that does not mean that the single-player modes stood far behind.

Review: 8/10

Though primitive compared to modern military FPS games like Call of Duty and Battlefield, Greg Hastings' Tournament Paintball scores an 8 out of 10 for its unapologetic focus on recreating authentic competitive paintball gameplay.

While character animations and graphics fail to impress by today's standards, Greg Hastings' simple yet strategic gameplay retains the heart-pounding thrills of tournament paintball that made it a cult hit. Its multiplayer modes provide hours of enjoyable team-based competition between friends.

Even though the graphics may be robust by today’s standards we have to keep in mind this game was released nearly two decades ago, and we have to compare it to games from a similar time. Even so, they were not at the top of the class, but still, they delivered a pretty solid entry and we also have to give credit to the incredible job they did at recreating a realistic simulation of paintball.
