Step into the shoes of the decorated Vietnam War veteran John Rambo in this action packed, nostalgia driven shooter Rambo: The Video Game. Experience iconic moments from the first three films while using an array of weapons to mow down enemies.
Draw First Blood
Rambo: The Video Game is presented as an on-rails first person shooter that takes you through major events that occurred in the first three movies of the franchise. Play through Rambo’s jailbreak and subsequent demolition of a small town from First Blood, fight through the jungles of Vietnam and help prisoners of war escape in Rambo: First Blood Part II, and experience the Afghan desert and explosive conclusion to Rambo III. Each level is rendered faithfully to the movie, and utilizes quick time events to enable gameplay during scripted sequences. Keep your reflexes as sharp as Rambo’s knife to make sure scenes play out exactly like the movies!
Use a wide array of recognizable weaponry from the movies, including Rambo’s bow (with multiple different arrow types, including explosive tips), multiple versions of his iconic survival knife, and no Rambo experience would be complete without a heavy machine gun. Standard first person shooter fare is also present, such as several pistols, assault rifles, sniper rifles, and rocket launchers. Use these weapons to become your enemies’ worst nightmare, and give them a war they won't believe.
Show No Mercy
Gameplay is split up into a few different types: stealth, shooting gallery, and destruction. In a stealth sequence, use your knife and bow to silently eliminate enemies, and successfully complete quick time events to move while avoiding detection. Shooting galleries make up the bulk of the game, and consist of using your reticle to aim at and shoot enemies while the game takes you from point to point.
These sections also have light cover mechanics, in that you can pop down at any location to stop taking damage, reload, and prepare for the next wave of enemies. Destruction scenes usually happen while in some type of vehicle (helicopters and tanks among them), and involve you using any artillery at your disposal to destroy vehicles, buildings, and other structures. Shoot missiles, machine gun turrets, and explosive arrows to level buildings and stop enemy Jeeps from delivering more soldiers.
Nothing Is Over
In addition to your weapons, Rambo: The Video Game also presents players with upgradeable skills and perks. The five skills are Toughness, Light Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Special Equipment, and Wrath. These skills provide bonuses to certain weapons, allow you to take less damage, and in the case of Wrath, slow down time and have enemies highlighted for bonus points. Wrath also restores health upon enemy kills, so it's an important aspect of gameplay since there is no other method of health regeneration.
The perk system has 25 unlockable perks that give you bonus points under certain conditions, regenerate more health while in wrath mode, and a very useful perk makes it impossible to fail quick time events. However, you can only equip 3 at a time, so choose wisely.
- The game uses Sylvester Stallone’s likeness and voice clips from the movies to immerse the player
- The on-rails system makes for a fun, arcade style experience that is reminiscent of other arcade classics, like Time Crisis
- The perk and skill system allow for quite a bit of replayability
- Graphics don’t hold up very well
- The game can be quite difficult when many enemies are presented at the same time
- Many of the quick time events are easy to fail without the associated perk
