Released in 2002, Hot Wheels Velocity X is a combat racing game aimed at younger children. It was released for the PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, PC, and Game Boy Advance. PS2, GC, and PC are pretty much the same game, but it is the Game Cube version that I was putting through its paces. Based on the popular series of Hot Wheels toys, I am sure there were many kids who saw this on shelves back in the day and were excited to get it.
They Stole The Formula
No, I am not talking about the Krabby Patty formula! I am talking about the Velocity X formula which makes cars go double their speed. This along with a prototype car was stolen and now teenager and racing prodigy Max Justice (a badass name by the way) needs to try and get it back.
The story is clearly aimed at kids and it is like something that would be on a show on Nick and that is cool. I know that my son would find this kind of story interesting and I am sure most other kids would feel the same.
Get Ready For Adventure
The main game mode in Hot Wheels Velocity X is the Adventure Mode. This is a story-based mode set across five different areas where you have to complete a variety of tasks. In total there are 14 missions in the game and each mission has a set of tasks for you to complete. These range from destroying cars, collecting items, winning races, and so on and there are never the two same kind of tasks back-to-back to it does keep your interested better than you would think. This mode has story sections in it too which move the plot along.
Can You Handle The Challenge
As well as the Adventure Mode, Hot Wheels Velocity X also has a challenge mode for you to play. In this mode, you have to do different challenges such as earn so many points by doing stunts, collecting a set number of gears, and so on. It may sound like basic stuff, but it is kind of fun and it gives you something else to do in the game.
Like A Game From 2002
Look, this game is nearly 20 years old and overall, I have to say it feels and looks like that in every regard. The cars control well enough and being able to attack and do tricks is cool and something kids will get a real kick out of for sure. The way the game looks is again, ok, but it also shows its age here too. It is not that this is a bad game, it is just a rather dated one.
I have to say that it would be so easy to say that Hot Wheels Velocity X is not worth your time at all, but I feel that would be a bit on the harsh side. The thing is, I feel there have been so many better vehicular combat games released since this one came out. If you know a younger gamer that loves Hot Wheels, this will probably be something they get a kick out of. This is most certainly not a horrible game, but it is kind of forgettable.
- The story of the game is actually pretty cool
- Doing tricks with the cars is great
- There is a nice sense of speed in the game
- Playing with a friend can be a lot of fun
- The game shows its age in pretty much every regard
- It does nothing “bad” it just does not do anything particularly great
