Everyone’s favorite lasagna loving cat has now made his appearance on the racetrack. Garfield Kart bring Garfield and all of his pals into the realm of racing (which I am sure was hard to get Garfield to do, considering it requires movement). This spin off of the beloved black and orange cat cartoon combined with the famous style of Mario Kart is a hilariously enjoyable racing game for those wishing to get a little more time with Garfield and Jon as their arguments turn into competition.
Garfield Kart is very clearly just a single-player Mario Kart 64 with different characters. The game, currently available on Steam, has received very positive reviews, aside from it being a running joke to not actually review the game when giving a review.
The game offers a championship styled campaign mode similar to any sports game with a single player mode, where the player attempts to climb through the ranks to be the best player/team in whatever sport the game is based around. The game overall is a fun spin-off great for kids who might love Garfield, making their Mondays just a little better, since they will no longer be hating them alone.
Graphics & Design Style
Following the cartoon’s art style, the game is very cartoonish, with round , bright features, making the entire game appear to almost be hand-drawn. With plenty of customization, the game has plenty different styles available for characters, vehicles, and accessories, making the art style stand out and giving each part of the game its own taste, bringing nostalgia and love straight from Garfield to a new platform.
While the game does not offer multiplayer, the competition is still very much alive in single player with many characters making it feel as if your competitors are real. The sixteen (16) different circuits that the game offers keeps a good variety and players on their toes, never knowing which part of Garfield’s world they may pop up in to show off their racing skills. Scattered throughout each track is also a series of powerups that the racers may be able to obtain to aid them in capturing the first place prize. As the eight famous characters (including Garfield himself!) attempt to grab these power ups such as pies, lasagnas, and exploding diamonds to either propel them forward or slow their opponents, it can be guaranteed that no race in Garfield Kart will ever prove to be boring. If someone does somehow manage to get to this point, however, the game offers three levels of difficulty and daily challenges as well, keeping even the most advanced players on the edge of their seats!
The game is only available for computer players, available on both Windows and Mac OS X systems from Steam. For those not too familiar or fond of a keyboard and mouse, however, have the choice to plug in a controller and race that way. With no multiplayer and no split-screen compatibility, the game is dampened a little in its excitement, but for a casual game of Monday hating and lasagna loving from the world’s most famous cartoon cat, Garfield Kart is unbeatable.
This game would be a five because Mario Kart already dominates the racing games, but because it has Garfield, I give the game a 6/10.
