Jumanji: The Video Game is an adaptation of the hit reboot film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, that released in late-2017. Just like in the film, four characters are sucked into a fantasy world, where they must survive deadly jungle hazards while recovering ancient artifacts. The game features the same characters as the film, including Ruby Roundhouse, Smolder Bravestone, and more. Thrust into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with hostile foes, you must fight your way through the forest, blasting down anyone who stands in your way. Unfortunately, there's a lot of issues with the game, but it's still entertaining to journey through the jungle with friends.
Main Game Features
- Four-player co-op
- Unlockable cosmetic items
- Exciting third-person shooter gameplay
Story
Jumanji: The Video Game is broken up into four main areas, each one posing a risk against your squad of players. At the beginning of each expedition, you'll get a short briefing from Nigel, the quick-witted tour guide, before setting off.
Your adventures in Jumanji: The Video Game takes you through craggy, mountainous regions, deep into hidden temples and tombs, and of course, into dense jungles. The storytelling is light, as there are no cutscenes or extra dialogue, which is a bit disappointing. Characters occasionally spout off one-liners during combat, but apart from that, there's very little in the way of character-building or narrative.
Gameplay
Although you can play the game solo with AI, Jumanji: The Video Game is designed to be played as a cooperative multiplayer experience. There are four characters to choose from, and each one feels slightly different to use. Every character also possesses a unique special ability, which helps provide a bit of variety. Similar to games like Left 4 Dead and Warhammer: Vermintide, you'll progress through different sections of the level, fighting off hordes of enemies and completing short objectives.
When you're not gunning down bad guys or beating them up with your melee attack, you'll usually be guarding a precious relic. In some specific areas, you'll need to defend the relic while it charges up, usually to open a nearby door. Other areas play out like Temple Run-style obstacle courses, as you must dodge booby-traps and spikes to survive. As you play levels with each character you'll level up, unlocking bonus costume items to equip. These items don't change anything about the gameplay and only provide minor visual differences, but still represent the only form of progression in the game.
Conclusion
Movie tie-in video games aren't known for being the best, and Jumanji: The Video Game is no exception. Many of the gameplay mechanics can feel underwhelming, there's a big lack of storytelling, and there are only four levels to play through. However, if you have a group of friends to play with, Jumanji: The Video Game can still be fun.
Unfortunately, many players will likely find the game too repetitive to play for long, but at the end of the day, it's still oddly fun to shoot through the jungle while playing as the Jumanji cast.
