JPDE – Sonata of Fire was highly (actually pretty aggressively) recommended to me by a good friend who also loves lewd games. I told him I was not interested as this is a parody style game and I have never seen the original so why would I play the parody? He told me it did not matter…. And he was right! This is just a fantastic lewd adventure game with an epic fantasy setting that was so much fun, it kind of made me want to check out the series it is based on.

RWBY Baby!

The series that JPDE – Sonata of Fire is a parody of is RWBY. I am not going to pretend I know anything about it as I have never seen it, but I had at least heard of it. This meant that for me, this game had to stand on its own and it did that very well. What we basically have here is a fantasy style story with magic, swords, warriors, and so on. Growing up in the 80s, fantasy has always been a genre I enjoyed and above all else, this is a fantastic fantasy story, even if I did know nothing about the source material.

Who Am I?

The character we play as in JPDE – Sonata of Fire is called, David di Kabegis. We have crashed on this strange land and we have lost our memories. We are found by this very “nice” girl and we end up at an academy where we are training in combat. The strange thing is, even though we have lost our memories, we somehow possess impressive combat abilities. The writing here is excellent, we have drama, comedy, excitement, and I was legit interested to see what would happen next. I cannot speak for how close it is to the source material it is a parody of, but for me, it more than stood on its own.

Easy On The Eyes!

While I really enjoyed the fantasy setting, story, and characters of JPDE – Sonata of Fire, it was the art that really blew me away. Again, I know nothing about this series so I cannot say how close the character designs are. What I can tell you is that this game features some truly amazing anime art. The lewd stuff here is great, but it was the game in general that impressed the hell out of me. I loved this fantasy world and it had made me interested to check out RWBY.

RPG Lite!

I was sure that JPDE – Sonata of Fire would be a standard lewd visual novel, but this actually has more in common with an RPG. You have different stats that you have to work on and there is a combat system. The game is quite grindy as the combat starts out very easy, but some of the later fights are brutally tough so the balancing could do with some work. However, I think for the most part it is fun stuff and the grinding made it feel more like an old school RPG. However, if I am being honest, I have to say that I could see why the grind could be off putting for some.

9.5

Again, RWBY is not a show or series I know anything about. However, JPDE – Sonata of Fire as a game on its own merit is fantastic. I was pulled right into this fantasy world and had a great time exploring and making my way through the story. The actual gameplay was solid too and I even got into the grind and enjoyed it. I had a great time with this one and it could not be any easier for me to recommend it to you.

Pros:

  • This is an epic fantasy story
  • I grew to really like some of the characters
  • The art in this game is phenomenal
  • I liked the RPG style gameplay

Cons:

  • While I liked it, I can see why some may find it a bit grindy
  • I cannot say how good an RWBY parody it is
