Pax Nova

Pax Nova is a turn-based strategy game set in space that allows players to conquer, exploit and expand into the outer reaches of space to uphold their power across the galaxy. Fans of CIV, Stellaris and Endless Space 2 will definitely like the setting, as well as the more in-depth strategic systems in play.

Next Hex Please

Pax Nova’s method of expanding your reach into space is through a hex and tile based system. This won’t come as a surprise to fans of other strategy games. Players start off their journey getting to choose their first hex. Each game is totally randomised, so players will need to decide what they would like to focus on, depending on which tiles are on offer when the game begins. Likewise, some tiles can’t be built on due to the resources that lie underground, so the terrain is always unique for every playthrough.

Once your first city is built, players need to balance a number of attributes. Players will need to manage prosperity, finances, pollution, defences, as well as citizens. As the city grows (which it can do by itself, given the right attributes) players need to carefully balance their impact on the world alongside their city’s attributes. Too much development could result in catastrophic pollution, and too little resources could leave no harmony or prosperity to your citizens. Speaking of citizens, you can assign your citizens roles to certain districts in order to improve your city’s resources.

Fighting Factions

Another big part of the Pax Nova experience is the relationship between different factions during different ‘eras’. There are a total of 15 premade factions within the game, as well as the option for players to create their own. The premade factions all have their own unique identities, species characteristics, and motivations.

Every faction has a seal and traits. Seals give factions certain attributes over other factions. This plays a big role when starting a new playthrough, as some seals give you a +1 buff on prosperity across your whole empire, while others allow unemployment to not affect your prosperity stat.

Alongside seals comes collections of traits. These traits come in both positive and negative forms. The game requires players to choose 3 positive traits and also 1 negative one. This allows for a lot of experimentation and unique gameplay experiences.

Factions also have exclusive technologies that are unavailable to other factions. Unlocked later on in the game, each technology is extremely powerful.

Diplomacy in Space

Factions allow for diplomacy across different civilizations and empires. When in the diplomacy section of the game, players will be able to see different attributes of their relationship to other factions.

Certain factions might respect the player but not trust them, while others may resent and fear them. These attributes are calculated through worldbuilding such as previous battles and the qualities of the players faction.

From the diplomacy section players can negotiate with other faction leaders, offering them everything from money, alliance agreements, to all out war. There are some basic dialogue trees to make the process seem more natural, but the best part of this section is how players can use it to leverage more power by turning enemies against one another and boosting their own standing. For example, through diplomacy players can gain the seal of another faction, allowing them to collect benefits that they otherwise would not have.

PROS:

  • Art style is nice to look at
  • Lots of detail in diplomacy and faction-to-faction relationships
  • Management at a planetary and galactic level

CONS:

  • A bit dry in tone
  • No multiplayer option
  • Some writing and spelling issues
