Plague Inc is a strategy/simulation game where players try to infect the entire world with microorganisms like viruses, pathogens and parasites to cause a global pandemic. You compete against humans who are researching cures or vaccines for the pandemic you caused. You must achieve your objectives before the humans.
Released in 2012 for mobile devices, the game became a hit and it was later released for consoles and PC as Plague Inc: Evolved.
You start the game by picking your choice of pathogen. You can pick one of various viruses, pathogens and disease types. Each pathogen has varying abilities, symptoms, and mode of transmission. There are various game modes available with each game mode having its unique objectives. But the major goal is to infect and kill all humans on earth. The console versions have a multiplayer mode where you can compete against other players to cause pandemics, with the deadliest one winning.
Plague Inc is fun to play. You find yourself devising new ways of spreading your pathogens and causing chaos worldwide. You strategize a lot, thinking of ways to beat the smart AI. You find yourself coming up with ingenious ways of spreading your plague to several countries before humans can notice it.
You need to balance as many things as possible. For example, if you make your virus too deadly, humans will die before they can spread the virus to as many places as possible.
Realistic Plague Simulation
Plague Inc largely improves on similar games like Pandemic with more realistic features and gameplay. Plague Inc uses realistic modeling, variables and parameters to simulate a real-life epidemic. The AI is smart and formidable. Infections start off slowly before mutating like real-life viruses to spread faster, resist the human immune system and become deadlier. Unlike some similar games, not all symptoms show at once. Symptoms are first mild or asymptomatic before becoming aggressive.
You see news updates on how your plague is affecting the politics, economics and lives of several countries. Each country is laid out according to climate, population density, and borders that help you plan your epidemic better. You get statistics that compare your plague with other diseases and pandemics like the Spanish Flu.
The graphics look good on console and PC. The game is so realistic that the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) acknowledged the accuracy of the game. James Vaughan, the game developer once gave a speech at the CDC. The game became even more popular around the world during the 2014 Ebola epidemic and the 2020 Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Plague Inc is a satisfying pandemic simulation game. The game gives you a sense of how epidemics occur and how pathogens spread. A lot of work went into the game and you will appreciate it while playing it. Plague Inc will teach you safety precautions like washing your hands regularly and avoiding human contact during an epidemic.
