What do we know about Project: Ragnarok? We are vehemently sure that the game won't be called that, but players can probably guess the theme of this upcoming MMORPG. That's right; we'll be transported to a world based on Norse mythology, where we'll receive a Viking-focused game environment. What's left to decipher is very little.
Project: Ragnarok has been in development for a couple of years now, initially only slated to be released in Asia. However, there's keen interest in distributing the game worldwide. That may be why we've only seen information about the game trickle in small doses because there's no set development or release plan yet. Regardless, there's keen interest in the title from the trailer, so let's pick apart what we can.
A Viking's Life for Me
Project: Ragnarok is a self-proclaimed next-generation MMORPG that will sweep through the competition with its strategy-based approach, paired with more detailed game environments and rich Nordic lore. Can we back their claims that this will be an attractive prospect for a massively multiplayer game? Well, we only have the trailer to see at the moment.
If the one teaser says anything, it's not much. There are a lot of ambitious gameplay elements, including flying movement, heavily detailed game environments, and significantly varied combat. Those factors could be fascinating, but we're all well aware that what we receive as the end product usually differs from what is promised in the beginning.
Allegedly, there will be nine realms to explore, Nordic foes to eliminate, and the prospect of building a warrior that can rule the heavens. If Project: Ragnarok is the same game we see in the trailer, there's plenty of reason to be excited. However, the radio silence over the past couple of years is what's concerning, leading to believe the title isn't what was announced or plans have collapsed completely.
Digging a bit deeper shows the former might be true. Project: Ragnarok had a beta test where nothing about the gameplay matched the trailer, and the spark from the announcement was gone. So what's next for the MMO if everything uncovered is correct? The developers might be trying to salvage what's been done to create something that will appeal to players, but we're still in the unknown for now.
Still Under Odin's Hammer
Project Ragnarok follows a similar storyline to the outcome of the canceled Titan project from Blizzard. The game was confused and cluttered as an MMO, where initially canceled, the assets were used to form what we see today as Overwatch. Project Ragnarok may be in this development phase. The people in charge are sorting out where to go after a disappointing beta.
We've had no official communication, so we'll only have to speculate about what's going on around Project Ragnarok's development. Still, the trailer offered some good things. If anyone could make that a reality, we'd undoubtedly have an intriguing MMORPG.
