Portal is a title that redefined the concept of a first-person puzzle game. Its physics-based gameplay coupled with its unique sense of humor made the game a staple in the video gaming space. As a concept, it is tough to tackle but Airtight Games’ attempts to replicate and expand on the Portal experience with Quantum Conundrum. With platforming action, a quirky sense of humor and tons of ways you can manipulate the laws of physics, Quantum Conundrum is a game made for the true fans of Portal-like puzzle genre.
Here’s everything you need to know about Quantum Conundrum:
Like Dexter’s Lab
One of the reason’s players tend to stray away from puzzle games is that they can feel pretty dry. Either they take their worlds too seriously or they have no lore or narrative to speak of. Portal changed that with quirky and silly humor that makes you feel like you’re the rat in a twisted experiment.
Quantum Conundrum attempts to take that same concept while injecting a bit of a Dexter’s Laboratory level of cartoon jokes and tropes. The result is a game that has color and is quite entertaining and funny at times but in many ways feels a bit copycattish.
Forget Newtonian Laws
The laws of physics are not possible to break in the real world. In Quantum Conundrum, however, you’ll need to make use of your mad scientist uncle’s contraptions and experiments to solve the game’s diverse levels. By using his invention, the Interdimensional Shift Device, you’ll need to shift between realities to solve a litter of riddles throughout his house with the goal of finding him. There are a total of four dimensions with their own unique properties. The Fluffy dimension makes everything, well, fluffy and soft, while the Heavy dimension is weighty and solid. Later in the game, you gain access to a time manipulation dimension and another that defies gravity. It’s definitely a unique take on the Portal formula.
Airtight Games has cleverly designed levels that make Quantum Conundrum feel more fluid that Portal while also giving you plenty of room for experimentation. This is achieved by allowing you to chain riddle-solving with challenges. At first, the game can feel like it’s no different than Portal but ultimately once the other two dimensions are unlocked you get a wide range of options that truly take Quantum Conundrum’s gameplay to the next level.
The Bottom Line
Portal is a unique game that defined its own sub-genre. As such, it’s a tough act to follow. Quantum Conundrum barely manages to separate itself from its Valve sibling thanks to its own take on puzzle-solving and platforming mechanics.
If you can overcome the more limited earlier levels, the game truly comes into its own and blows you away.
