As soon as I found out that Sphere - Flying Cities was a sci-fi city builder I knew that this was a game for me. I have always been a fan of these types of games and as well as having a setting and story that I found very interesting. This game also seemed like it offered gameplay mechanics that were deep, but not so deep and convoluted it would result in the game not being fun. Keep on reading to see if this is a city building game that is for you!
Cities In The Sky
The game has a fantastic premise. In Sphere - Flying Cities the moon has been shattered and caused massive destruction on Earth! Thankfully, thanks to this new anti-gravity technology, mankind can survive in these floating cities!
You are the person in charge of making sure that this floating city is working right! Humanity could thrive, but before that, they have to just survive and this is all on you!
Supply And Demand
If you have played any kind of city building game before then you will already know what to expect here with Sphere - Flying Cities. You need to build a city for people to live in, work, and thrive. There is a great deal that goes into this as you would expect. You need to make sure people have a place to live and are happy, but other utilities such as power and so on are needed too. You also need to be researching stuff as well, making sure that your new society is always moving forward. This is the kind of game where it is like something always needs your attention and for those of us that love to micromanage stuff in a game, there is a lot to keep you busy here.
Keeping It All Running
There are many aspects of Sphere - Flying Cities that I think are really cool, but I wanted to talk about a couple of the ones that really caught my attention. One is that you have to scavenge on the ruins of the planet to find vital resources. You do this by sending robots down to try and find them. Another aspect is the whole anti-gravity thing. This is a major part of the game and you have to make sure it is always working or it will spell disaster for your civilization.
I have been trying to think of the best way to describe the way that Sphere - Flying Cities looks, but it is kind of hard. It has a bit of a Sim City vibe going on, all be it a higher-end one. I do think that sci-fi movies of the 80s may have been the inspiration here. Well, that is what I was getting from the way the game looks anyway.
If you like sci-fi city builders then this is one of the best ones to be released this year. I think it has one of the most interesting premises of a game in this genre to be released in quite some time. I do have to say that this is an early access game, but it does look like Sphere - Flying Cities is going to be pretty feature packed when it was first released.
- I love the setting and story that this game has
- It has a very 80s sci-fi look to it
- Plenty of important decisions that need to be made
- You can send robots to scavenge for stuff
- One wrong move can spell disaster!
- I think you have to be into sci-fi to truly appreciate the story
